Bottles and Bibles (2011)

  1. Hard Times

    Lyrics: Hard Times

I bought a house at the mouth of the holler
A ring at the pawn shop and a crib for the kid
I heard some word, there was work up in Hindman
I'm going tomorrow and hope that there is

My sweat and my wages they don't seem to weight out
I'm gettin' more aches than I'm gainin' in gold
Whoever said you could raise you a family
Just workin' your ass off knee deep in coal?

Well, the sign at the church says "I'll reap what I'm sowin'"
But I ain't lost sleep, it'll come in due time
And if the Lord wants to take me, I'm here for the taking
'Cause Hell's probably better than tryin' to get by

You can see me on the front page
    It'll be out tomorrow
A boy in his 20s, shot down in his prime

For trying to hold up the Texaco station
    They'll say I was desperate
    They're probably right
  2. Junction City Queen

    Lyrics: Junction City Queen

Oh dance with me, junction city queen
Just to hold you would be the greatest thing
Just spinnin' around to the sound of the jukebox so low
And as the time fades, I pray that it goes by slow

Oh sing for me, junction city queen
Well, you sound like an angel, so it seems
'Cause everything stops, as we pray you don't go
In the mornin' back to Ohio
But I find myself with empty arms
And a head that's full of dreams
    Of my junction city queen

Won't you wait for me, junction city queen?
Well, I'm headed that way, and I'm pickin' up steam
And I know for a while I'll be fine until I must leave
And wait for the next time that I see my queen
  3. We've Had Our Fun

    Lyrics: We've Had Our Fun

I need some money, I need it now
Get me a trunk load and I'll show you how
We'll take that shine and in no time
We'll be rollin' in the dough

But you don't take nothin' without gettin' bruised
See, there's always somethin' that you're bound to lose
    And it's usually gone
    Before you know

    When a man comes down
He won't cut us any slack
    'Cause we've had our fun
    On the road

See all them blue lights, they ain't your friends
They're bound to get you, but in the end
I'll show you all the tricky curves and what you need to swerve around

But you don't take nothin' without gettin' bruised
See, there's always somethin' that you're bound to lose
    And it's usually gone
    Before you know

    When a man comes down
He won't cut us any slack
    'Cause we've had our fun
    On the road

    When a man comes down
No, he won't cut us any slack
    'Cause we've had our fun
    On the road
  4. Coal

    Lyrics: Coal

God made coal for the men who sold their lives to West Van Lear
And you keep on digging 'til you get down there
Where it's darker than your darkest fears
And that woman in the kitchen
She keeps on cookin', but she ain't had meat in years
Just live off bread, live off hope, and a pool of a million tears

Now lemme tell you something about the gospel
And make sure that you mark it down
When God spoke out, "Let there be light"
He put the first of us in the ground

And we'll keep on digging 'til the coming of the Lord Gabriel's trumpet sounds
'Cause if you ain't mining for the company, boy
There ain't much in this town

We coulda made something of ourselves out there
If we'd listened to the folks that knew
That coal is gonna bury you

Now it's darker than a dungeon
And it's deeper than a well
So sometimes, I imagine that I'm getting pretty close to Hell
And in my darkest hour, I cry out to the Lord
He says, "Keep on a-mining, boy, 'cause that's why you were born"

We coulda made something of ourselves out there
If we'd listened to the folks that knew
That coal is gonna bury you
  5. Good Thing Windin' down

    Lyrics: Good Thing Windin' down

    Don't hold me
    If you don't mean it
'Cause I'm tired of wastin' my time on things set on leavin'
    Don't kiss me
    If it really hurts you
Though I can't see how you could change after all that we've been through

I reckon it's time for a good thing to wind on down
But it kills me to see
That you don't give a damn about me
Oh, I'd die for the chance we could be
Like we were when the summer was right
But you can't bring back days
Or nights that you've done danced away
I keep hopin' that maybe you'll stay
Don't leave me here lonely tonight

    In my dreams
    We're always laughin'
But I wake up to find that that very rarely happens
So go on and leave me
    If it'd really please you
You'll be hard pressed to find you a man that will treat you like I do

But I reckon it's time for a good thing to wind on down
But it kills me to see
That you don't give a damn about me
Oh, I'd die for the chance we could be
Like we were when the summer was right
But you can't bring back days
Or nights that you've done danced away
I keep hopin' that maybe you'll stay
Don't leave me here lonely tonight
  6. Play Me a Hank Song

Lyrics: Play Me a Hank Song

Well, it all seemed so happy
    But how can that be?
When there's a whole class of people
    Just as lonesome as me

You asked me to tell you
How I can be so blue?
    But you'd be the same
If the girl of your dreams
    Broke your heart in two

So play me a Hank song
    To ease my pain
Because it helps to know someone
    Felt the same damn way
    Alone and forsaken
    Brother, what can I say?
I feel like a Hank song
    Since she went away

    Ol' KG's my buddy
    We go way back
To the times back in high school
When I was too poor for Jack

But even he knows that sometimes
You can't help right the wrongs
    By gettin' stoned blind
You need to sit down and pine
    To a Hank Sr. song

So play me a Hank song
    To ease my pain
Because it helps to know someone
    Felt the same damn way
    Alone and forsaken
    Brother, what can I say?
You know I feel like a Hank song
    Since she went away

Well, I hope that she's happy
And I hope that she's free
I hope she finds her a man
To treat her like a queen

And then up out of nowhere
    When she needs him around
    She wakes up to find
She's ran out of time, and he's ran out of town

I hope she needs her a Hank song
    To ease her pain
Because it'll help to know someone
    Felt the same damn way
    Alone and forsaken
    Honey what can I say?
I hope you feel like a Hank song
    One of these days
  7. If Whiskey Could Talk

    Lyrics: If Whiskey Could Talk

If a whiskey could talk, it'd say I'm a great guy
Or at least it ought to, for as much as I buy
But it's a money well spent, just to help me feel free
From the pain she creates when she's cheating on me

Well, she's at it again, living high on the streets
So I reach for the bottle just to help me to sleep
And I lay here in bed and dream of a time
When she was content with being all mine

If a whiskey could talk, it'd say I'm a great guy
Or at least it ought to, for as much as I buy
But it's a money well spent, just to help me feel free
From the pain she creates when she's cheating on me

She'll come back to me when the lights have gone down
And she's ran out of men to buy her around
But she dreads coming home to that drunk in her bed
Who's living alone, hanging on by a thread

If a whiskey could talk, it'd say I'm a great guy
Or at least it ought to, for as much as I buy
But it's a money well spent, just to help me feel free
From the pain she creates when she's cheating on me
  8. The Harvest

    Lyrics: The Harvest

When the trigger's moving backwards, and the pin hits the shell
When my soul sinks slowly into the warm pits of hell
Won't you tell my baby sister that I'll be back in the fall
'Cause it's better to have false hope than no hope at all

And I'll be meeting with my Savior to go over my foolish deeds
When he asks me why I did it, Lord, I'll blame it on the seed
'Cause it didn't grow in like I planned, and when it did it all went dry
And I couldn't stand to hear the pain of a small baby crying

Well, I remember in the graveyards, well I used to read the names
And I wondered when the good Lord would take my soul away
Well, I wonder if he planned it to happen like this at all
With the shot heard halfway cross the world, and my sins on the wall

And I'll be meeting with my Savior to go over my foolish deeds
When he asks me why I did it, Lord, I'll blame it on the seed
'Cause it didn't grow in like I planned, and when it did it all went dry
And I couldn't stand to hear the pain of a small baby crying

And they'll tell me I'm a bad man
But they've never seen the sight
Of a baby wailing in his crib
    And ripping apart the night
    It's a small baby crying
  9. Detroit

    Lyrics: Detroit

    One, two, three

Readin' and writin' on Route 23
It's hard to believe we made it this far
So come on boys and grab your coats
Detroit's awaitin', get in the car

Well the wind that blows cold
But the girls are on fire
They say that they're the prettiest things you have seen
    And I ain't a gambler
But I'd bet the farm that Detroit's a gold mine waitin' for me

The sidewalks are always jammed in this town
I feel like a dam that's about to cut loose
And the girls, they say they'll treat you fine
Beg for your silver 'til you can't refuse

And I'd love to go back to the hills where I's born
'Stead of workin' on cars that I can't afford
My pockets are empty, my patience is torn
Oh, look what's become of me

Mama, I'm writin' to tell ya I'm fine
I'm workin real hard, and I pray every night
    So don't you worry
    I'm happy and free
Detroit's been like a blessing to me
  10. Bottles and Bibles

    Lyrics: Bottles and Bibles

    Bottles and bibles
    Litter the floor
    An all night revival
    Passed out around 4:00

    Now the preacher's been drinkin'
But it's hard not to do
Since she ran out the screen door
    And swore they were through

Oh Lord, if you care, send a spirit down here
'Cause the preacher's been drinkin' again

But it's a hard way to go, on the straight and narrow
When everybody in town points a finger at you
But they ain't had to walk with the weight that you've hauled
They don't know you at all, but they think that they do

    He didn't believe her
He just knew she'd come home
    But the nights kept a-crawlin'
    As he laid there alone

    He'd call up to Heaven
    He'd hope and he'd pray
    But the line's always busy
    Since he went astray

Oh Lord, if you care, won't you answer his prayers
'Cause the preacher's been drinkin' again

But it's a hard way to go, on the straight and narrow
When everybody in town points a finger at you
But they ain't had to walk with the weight that you've hauled
They don't know you at all, but they think that they do

    Now the bottles and bibles
    Broke out in a fight
    The whiskey fought hard, son
And took the victory that night

    They found him a-layin'
    Face down by the stairs
    Dressed up for a sermon
    Nobody would hear

Oh Lord, if you care, send your angels down here
'Cause the preacher's been drinkin' again

But it's a hard way to go, on the straight and narrow
When everybody in town points a finger at you
But they ain't had to walk with the weight that you've hauled
They don't know you at all, but they think that they do

So Lord, if you care, send your angels down here
'Cause the preacher's been drinkin' again
  11. The Gospel (According to Fishermen)

Lyrics: The Gospel (According to Fishermen)

I was raised in the house of a real holy roller
Warn the people 'bout the wages of the sin
He said, "Go out out yonder to the water and travel
'Cause disciples they were fishers of men
Yeah, disciples, they were fishers and men

So I got me a job on the first boat rowin'
And it's been a mighty long time
Since I sat in the house of my father and my mother
Or I seen that woman of mine
Yeah, that good lovin' gal of mine

I said, "Babe I'm a-goin' on a little bitty journey
I'll be back when the fishin 'is through
While I'm away, make haste to get ready
For when Jesus comes for you"
When the good Lord comes for you
When Jesus comes for you, here it comes

Sayin' shall we gather by the water, the beautiful water
Shall we gather by the water that flows from the throne of God

Well truth, it lies in the love of a woman
    Lord don't sink this boat
I got a pretty little thing waiting in New Orleans
With a dagger buy her throat
And she don't wanna do it, but she's that crazy
And if I don't make it back
She'll probably die alone and cold
As the Creole night turns black

Sayin shall we gather by the water, the beautiful water
Shall we gather by the water that flows from the throne of God

Shall we gather by the water, the beautiful water
Shall we gather by the water that flows from the throne of God
  12. Silence

    Lyrics: Silence

    One, two, three, one, two

    Oh Rosie, Rosie my girl
When our embrace is over, all that's left is the world
It's a mighty cold town, to be wanderin' around
    Without Rosie my girl

The floor, is about to give way
To the weight of the words, you've been dyin' to say
You could save this house, if you'd just say 'em now
    Oh Rosie my girl

Well silence, is mighty big grave
And whatever goes down there, is as cold as the clay
Won't you keep me warm, tell me what I done wrong
    Oh Rosie my girl
  13. Long Hard Road

    Lyrics: Long Hard Road

Church bells ring at your window, and I know that all of these things
Are surely found to be holy in the presence of the Lord
Tell me all that you're feeling and I will believe every word
'Cause to think you would speak out in lies
    Baby, that just sounds absurd

And if you want me to go, I will
But if you need me to stay, baby, that'd be a thrill

'Cause tomorrow will be a long, hard road out of Ohio
    And I'll hate every mile
That takes me back to Kentucky and away from your smile

Hold me and tell me you need me
I need you more than you know
'Cause now that I've found what I wanted, it's hard to let it go

And the hills have always been home
But now that I've found you, the shadows seem cold

And tomorrow will be a long, hard road out of Ohio
    And I'll hate every mile
That takes me back to Kentucky and away from your smile

And if you want me to go, I will
But if you need me to stay, baby, that'd be a thrill

'Cause tomorrow will be a long, hard road out of Ohio
    And I'll hate every mile
That takes me back to Kentucky and away from your smile

Purgatory (2017)

  1. I Swear (To God)

    Lyrics: I Swear (To God)

I only had a couple drinks last night
And few good hits from an antler pipe
And I must admit, I had a few white lines
And I don't know what all happened
I woke up in the noon time light
With a poundin' head, shiner on my eye
    And I don't know how, and I don't why
But it feels like fierce abandon

Ah, working on a buildin' out'a hand-hewn brimstone
Workin' on a buildin', and I'm buildin' on it all alone
Well there ain't nobody in my room tonight
    Goodnight honey, honey sleep tight
Ma, I swear I'm doing alright
But when the evenin' comes around
    I swear to God

Pay no mind to the words I say
'Cause they ain't no count anyway
I been ramblin' around and led astray
By the paths that I been choosin'
Cuttin' paths like a forest fire
    Pupils wider than backhoe tires
Throwin' my money on a funeral pyre
But it sure feels good abusin'

Ah, working on a buildin' out'a hand-hewn brimstone
Workin' on a buildin', and I'm buildin' on it all alone
Well, there ain't nobody in my room tonight
    Goodnight honey, honey sleep tight
Ma, I swear I'm doing alright
But when the evenin' comes around
    I swear to God

Bands too loud for their bible thumpin'
Feels too good to not count for somethin'

Big Sandy rock, Sludge River roll
    Goddamn, fire in the hole
Look out baby, I'm bound to blow
I'm bound to blow a gasket
Damn good gig, good damn crowd
Good God, for cryin' out loud
Coming off-stage, I was mighty proud
Then I don't know what all happened

Ah, working on a buildin' out'a hand-hewn brimstone
Workin' on a buildin', and I'm buildin' on it all alone
Well there ain't nobody in my room tonight
    Goodnight honey, honey sleep tight
Ma, I swear I'm doing alright
But when the evenin' comes around
    I swear to God

    I swear to God
  2. Feathered Indians

    Lyrics: Feathered Indians

    Well my buckle makes impressions
On the inside of her thigh
    There are little feathered Indians
Where we tussled through the night
If I'd known she was religious
Then I wouldn't have came stoned
To the house of such an angel
Too fucked up to get back home

    Lookin' over West Virginia
    Smoking Spirits on the roof
She asked ain't anybody told ya
That them things are bad for you
I said, "Many folks have warned me
    There's been several people try
But up 'til now, there ain't been nothing
    That I couldn't leave behind"

    Hold me close my dear
    Sing your whispering song
    Softly in my ear
    And I will sing along

Honey, tell me how your love runs true
And how I can always count on you
To be there when the bullets fly
I'd run across the river just to hold you tonight

Well my heart is sweating bullets
From the circles, it has raced
    Like a little feathered Indian
Callin' out the clouds for rain
I'd go runnin' through the thicket
I'd go careless through the thorns
Just to hold her for a minute
Though it'd leave me wanting more

    Hold me close my dear
    Sing your whispering song
    Softly in my ear
    And I will sing along

Honey, tell me how your love runs true
And how I can always count on you
To be there when the bullets fly
I'd run across the river just to hold you tonight
  3. Tattoos

    Lyrics: Tattoos

I am now the one she left
A haunted tale for someone else
    A little bit about herself
    Wherever she is sleeping
Flint strikes out to pierce the dark
Cause a flame from just one spark
Fill the room with smoke so harsh
    She exhales a memory

    The past is fadin'
Over time, but it's still hangin' on for life

I'm now her used to be
He is now the one she needs
He is now the one she leans on
She looks out at the sunset
On a quilt of rags he holds her tight
And they raise a toast of Bulleit Rye
Whiskey kills all things in time
    Like things she don't remember

    The past is fadin'
Over time, but it's still hanging on for life

I am now an old headstone
To her grave, I'll die alone
A testament of how she's grown
    Wherever she is sleepin'

    The past is fadin'
Over time, but it's still hanging on for life
  4. Born Again

    Lyrics: Born Again

Once I was a dying breed
    Chewin' on an ancient leaf
    Before we took the notion
To keep up with the times
    And leave 'em all behind
    Chisel to the paper
    Tattoos on the ether
    Fadin' in the light
All the while I'd gorge my gut
Come the time then I would rut
Runnin' high and low to find my prehistoric queen
To keep me warm 'til Spring
When I'd go out with my friends
Graze the land and wonder when I'd see your face again
'Til the day I met my doom
I took one in the boiler room
To put food on the table of a dying breed of man
Once I was a broken heart
And once I tore your heart apart
Once my heart put out before I ever got to breathe
But my soul returned to seed
    And come to Earth again
Clucking out a livin' as the favorite layin' hen
'Til the day I met my doom
A fox got in the chicken coop
Doin' all he knew to do to feed a hungry den
On and on down the line
I've swam canals and bore the hide
Of plenty births along this ride of being born again
Once I was and you were too
And we were both the word of truth
    We built this world together
with a loud and mighty bang
Lord, it sounded like a train
    And echoed o'er the land
And we came up with a game to play of being born again
  5. Whitehouse Road

    Lyrics: Whitehouse Road

Early in the morning when the sun does rise
Laying in the bed with blood shot eyes
Late in the evening when the sun sinks low
That's about time my rooster crows

I've got women up and down this creek
Way to keep me going and my engine clean
Run me ragged, but I don't fret
'Cause there ain't been one slow me down just yet

    Get me drinking that moonshine
Get me higher than a grocery bill
Take my troubles to the high wall
Throw them in the river and get your fill

    We've been sniffing that cocaine
Ain't nothing better when the wind cuts cold
Lord, it's a mighty hard living
But a damn good feeling to run these roads

I got people trying to tell me Red
Keep this living and you wind up dead
Cast your troubles on the Lord of lords
Wind up lying on the cooling board

But I got buddies up at white house road
They keep me strutting when my feet hang low
Rotgut whiskey gonna ease my pain
And all this running is gonna keep me sane

    Get me drinking that moonshine
Get me higher than a grocery bill
Take my troubles to the high wall
Throw them in the river and get your fill

    We've been sniffing that cocaine
Ain't nothing better when the wind cuts cold
Lord, it's a mighty hard living
But a damn good feeling to run these roads
It's a damn good feeling to run these roads

When you lay me in the cold hard clay
Won't you sing them hymns while the banjo plays?
We could tell them ladies that they ought not frown
'Cause there ain't been nothing ever held me down
Law man, women or a shallow grave
Same old blues, just a different day

    Get me drinking that moonshine
Get me higher than a grocery bill
Take my troubles to the high wall
Throw them in the river and get your fill

    We've been sniffing that cocaine
Ain't nothing better when the wind cuts cold
Lord, it's a mighty hard living
But a damn good feeling to run these roads
It's a damn good feeling to run these roads
It's a damn good feeling to run these roads
  6. Banded Clovis

    Lyrics: Banded Clovis

Tina Nolan had a man with a good place for siftin'
He invited me diggin', so I picked up my screen
And a shovel to dig and a jar of shine
Traded me fair for a bottle of wine
    His brother's Barnes Mountain wine
We trudged through the snow straight up the hillside
Took a ridge for a while, then we slowly went down
To an overhang hid from the ridgeline
We bent o'er our handles and we bit in the ground
    The dark and bloody ground
Was a bitch to break ground but the wine kept us goin'
Moonshine was flowin' and keepin' us warm
'Cause you can't hold a girl with a fistful of shovel
Got to find your fire in the company of corn
We dug for a while then it all turned to ashes
Found a bunch of broke flint and a few bits of bone
Then I heard Jesse yell o'er the pile he was sifting
Shook the hills like the angels were callin' us home
    Jesse, Zachary come home
It was banded as hell, it was fluted and Clovis
It was hot as the pistol I kept on my side
And I was fiending so fierce, I was broke ass and busted
I pulled out my pistol and I took Jesse's life
Clovis like that is a hard point to find
Makes pills swift to come by with a good chunk of change
Left over for burn on whatever meanness
Whatever woman is comin' my way
    Darlin' come my way
I sit in this cell for the banded Clovis
I stole off of Nolan when I killed'm that day
I reckon the chase of the pills and the powder
Corn liquor and woman are the culprits to blame
  7. Purgatory

    Lyrics: Purgatory

    Will you pray for me
When the roots of the oak
    And my ribcage are braidin'
    If I can think
Lord knows that I will fondly pray for you

High on the hill where the fox horns blow
And down in the grave where they lay me low
    Catholic girl, pray for me
You're my only hope for Heaven

    When I's a boy
I'd drink and love and smoke and snort my fill
    But all the while
I kept in mind the Lord's redeeming grace

High on the hill where the fox horns blow
And down in the city where the heathens go
    Catholic girl, pray for me
You're my only hope for Heaven

Do you reckon He lets free will boys
    Mope around in purgatory?

    I know that Hell
Is just as real as I am surely breathin'
    But I've heard tale
Of a middle ground I think will work for me

When the time has come for changin' worlds
I'll hedge my bets with a Catholic girl
    Catholic girl, pray for me
You're my only hope for Heaven
  8. Honky Tonk Flame

    Lyrics: Honky Tonk Flame

I was out of my mind the first night we met
I was feeling lonely and blue
I just moved to the country to get me some rest
The city put a hurtin' on you
Especially a fella from Eastern Kentucky
Without a penny or a worth to his name
Wasting his life on a burning desire and chasing that honky tonk flame
You were soft on the eyes and a hymn on the hearin'
    Leaving me helpless of lines
To get you to listen to the way I was feeling
And the plans that I had made for our night
Hold on now buddy won't you wait up a minute
You're mistaken if you think I'm the same
As them skirts you've been chasing all over town
Along with that honky tonk flame
I'm a woman with a love so true
Truth of the matter, I'd give it to you
You just got to slow down, and quit acting that way
Burning your barn in this honky tonk flame
You were sweet to the touch and a touch for the takin'
The minute I learned how to breed
Finally found out that the love of a woman
Who love me was all that I need
Still on the road 'cause I ain't good for nothin'
Except writin' the songs that I sing
Beating them strings like they're owin' me money
And chasing that honky tonk flame
But I've got me a woman with a love so true
Darlin' to me, but that's misses to you
All I did was slow down
    Quit acting insane
Burning my barn in this honky tonk flame
  9. Universal Sound

    Lyrics: Universal Sound

Up in Pocahontas, near the Cranberry Glades
Ain't got bars, nor the charge to call her anyways
My mind's a mile a minute, and my thoughts they bark like hounds
I focus on my breathing and the universal sound

I think about my darling girl sleeping all alone
I pray the stars will shoot her all the wishes she can hold
On the day that I return, I aim to lay her down
But right now, I am focused on the universal sound

I think about tobacco juice and Mason jars of 'shine
I think about the vices I've let take me over time
    I recall when I was a baby, I didn't need nothing around
But a little bitty rattler and the universal sound

    I'd close my eyes
    It was all so clear
    It was all right then
    It was all right here

I focus on my breathing and the universal sound
I let it take me over from the toenails to the crown
Of the body that I'm in 'til they put me in the ground
And I return to the chorus of the universal sound

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen His wondrous grace
I've sat there on a bar stool, and I've looked Him in the face
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow Him down
He was humming to the neon of the universal sound
  10. Lady May

    Lyrics: Lady May

    I'm a stone's throw from the mill
And I'm a good walk to the river
    My workin' day is over
We'll go swim our cares away

Put your toes down in the water
And a smile across your face
And tell me that you love me
    Lovely Lady May

Now I ain't the sharpest chisel
That your hands have ever held
But darlin' I could love you well
'Til the roll is called on high

I've seen my share of trouble
And I've held my weight in shame
But I'm baptized in your name
    Lovely Lady May

Lord, the wind can leave you shiverin'
As it waltzes or it leaves
It's been rushin' through my timber
'Til your love brought on the spring

Now the mountains all are blushin'
And they don't know what to say
'Cept a good long line of praises
    For my lovely Lady May

Now I ain't the toughest hickory
That your ax has ever felled
But I'm a hickory just as well
I'm a hickory all the same

I came crashin' through the forest
As you cut my roots away
And I fell a good long ways
    For my lovely Lady May

Country Squire (2019)

  1. Country Squire

    Lyrics: Country Squire

Well, tonight I'm up in Chillicothe
    Downwind from the paper mill
I'm out here spittin' on the sidewalk
    Takin' in the factory smells

And I know she tends to smokin' out the window
In the air of that gas pipe leak
I wonder if she's cringin' at same time
    Thinkin' pretty thoughts of me

I was up for hours this mornin'
Pullin' traps 'fore I said goodbye
I plan to tan myself a fox hide
And hang it on my darlin' bride

'Cause they tell me that it's gonna be a big one
And the snow is settin' in
And I don't want her cold while I ain't at home
    The way that I've been

Spendin' my nights in a bar room, Lord
Turnin' them songs into two by fours
Dreamin' 'bout the day that I sit by the fire
Huddled with my honey in our Country Squire

Well, tomorrow we hit the country music highway
    On our way to Circleville
We're off to do some weekend warrin'
While we sing and drink our fill

And when I ain't out playin' on my six string
    With the nickles I acquire
I'm tryin' to fix her up a castle
    It's called the Country Squire

It's a twenty four foot long vessel
    It measures eight feet wide
    It's a fifty-three year old camper
    It's made to pull behind

And I've gutted to the studs and the rafters
And I'm buildin' back piece by piece
I'm tryin' to fix her up a temple
My lady of the Estill Springs

Spendin' my nights in a bar room, Lord
Turnin' them songs into two by fours
Dreamin' 'bout the day that I sit by the fire
Huddled with my honey in our Country Squire

One day I aim to have myself a family
And a cabin on the hill
And I might have to come off of the highway
To help with the family bills

But when the kids have got a little older
On the day that I retire
I'll take her somewhere warm for the winter
    Pullin' our Country Squire

Spendin' my nights in a bar room, Lord
Turnin' them songs into two by fours
Dreamin' 'bout the day that sit by the fire
Huddled with my honey in our Country Squire

Dreamin' 'bout the day that I sit by the fire
Huddled with my honey in our Country Squire
  2. Bus Route

    Lyrics: Bus Route

This is where we dropped off the prettiest little girl
    Same grade as me
Tried to kiss her once in the aisle of the bus
And she walked right over me
Face-down in the gum on the floor
I was hopin' that she'd change her mind
But I swear as she walked down the stairs
    She didn't even wave goodbye
    Didn't even wave goodbye
Ray Dixon didn't take no lip
He'd kick you right off the bus
Stop by your house on the way out of the holler
And tell your momma where you was
He didn't need no driver's aid
To keep a bunch of kids in line
All he needed was a glare in the mirror
And a paddle that he carved from pine
Blisterin' punk kids alive, aw, blisterin'
This is where we dropped off the prettiest little girl
    Same grade as me
I held onto hope for eight long years
And by the time that I turned sixteen
    I wasn't awkward, I was a real smooth talker
With my very own pickup truck
I'd take her home and if her parents weren't around
She'd bring me in and give me some
Bring me in and give me some
Safe to say nowadays ol' Ray
Coudln't keep a route very long
And I'm glad the little girl's dad
Never found out what was goin' on
I know he'd've kill me in a minute
And he wouldn't have left no trace
Hogs'll eat about anything you give 'em
And they don't let nothin' go to waste
Don't let nothin' go to waste
This is where we dropped off the prettiest little girl
    Same grade as me
  3. Creeker

    Lyrics: Creeker

In a small corner bar he sits there a-drinkin'
Lost as a ball in a field full of corn
Further away than he ever imagined
That he'd ever end up from the place he was born
Now no more forlorn as the Creeker drank whiskey
Than the one that you see outside of your eye
Drinkin' alone as he looks out the window
At all of the strangers on the corner outside
    He'd rather be dead
    Than alive one more minute
    In this godforsaken town
    When he was a kid
Lord, he'd never have dreamt it
All the ways that the city can bring a country boy down
Now they knew not his name and he knew not their faces
And he knew not the how nor the reason for why
You could ever wake up and wanna keep on livin'
In a place where a friend is such a hard thing to find
And for everyone you meet there's a whole mess of people
Tryin' like hell to pull you on down
To the level they're on and the trouble they're tendin'
In the mess that they've made, in the gutter they found
    And he'd rather be dead
    Than alive one more minute
    In this godforsaken town
    When he was a kid
Lord, he'd never have dreamt it
All the ways that the city can bring a country boy down
Some fellas do drugs and things of that nature
Some fellas chase girls to hang on their arm
Some fellas get by on practically nothin'
Some fellas get pissed in a small corner bar
    And they'd rather be dead
    Than alive one more minute
    In this godforsaken town
    When they were all kids
Lord, they'd never have dreamt it
All the ways that the city can bring a country boy down
  4. Gemini

    Lyrics: Gemini

If he knows how it feels to be beginnin' and the end
I reckon he knows the feelin' 'tween the now and then
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, friend
Lord, won't you help me carry my load?
I borrowed me a hammer, I swung it for a dime
I got to where I finally could afford me mine
But in between the swingin' and the idle time
I got to thinkin' heavy on the road
Now I'm hid out in the upper room
With walls so thin I could bust right through
Give all my buddies a ramblin' to
About things that really blows my mind
Back when I was younger, didn't have a clue
Come to think of it, I still doubt I do
But every now and then I get to thinkin'
"You know, I've got it all worked out"
I used to take my time and burn it in a bong
Iced down with the lights turned off
Somethin' in my speakers I can ponder on
    Somethin' I can mull around
Now I'm lit up like a Christmas tree
Check one-two, can y'all hear me?
The sights are somethin' but they ain't for free
Lookin' and I'm wired for sound
The road goes on forever, party 'til ten
Too run forever if you never let it end
A got a part of me that's wonderin' when
I'll finally kick the urge to roam
Part of me just wants to live forever on the road
Splittin' down the middle, shed my southpaw home
And if she gets to askin' tell her you don't rightly know
What happened to the rest of me
Aw, weep no more, girl don't cry
Hellfire, you married you a Gemini
This is the half of him you always liked
Lookie here, his heart still beats
  5. House Fire

    Lyrics: House Fire

You can set my house on fire, baby
You can turn it into cinder and smoke
'Cause this house is mighty cold
And I feel like, meltin' all the snow away

You see these boots I'm wearin'?
    They're tough enough to go

And they will take many a road to reach you
Honey, won't you light the way?
You can set my house on fire, baby
You can turn it into cinder and smoke
'Cause this house is mighty cold
And I feel like, meltin' all the snow away

You see this train I'm riding?
    It's burnin' up the coal
And it's wheels are bound to roll right by you
Honey, won't you jump my train?
You can set my house on fire, baby
You can turn it into cinder and smoke
'Cause this house is mighty cold
And I feel like, meltin' all the snow away

You can set my house on fire baby
You can turn it into cinder and smoke
'Cause this house is mighty cold
And I feel like, meltin' all the snow away
You can set my house on fire, baby
  6. Ever Lovin' Hand

    Lyrics: Ever Lovin' Hand

They got my favorite lotion here
Something in a hotel I admire
I got the pictures that you sent me
And how they fill me with desire
Tonight we've all got our own rooms
I'm about to burn mine down
'Cause I miss you somethin' fierce
In this quaint New England town
I read the texts you whispered plain
    Everything you aim to do
Sure do like the way you think
That's the way I'm thinking too
I see it play out in my mind
You and I unite as one
The van don't leave 'til 10AM
    And we've only just begun
This one here goes out to you
    Lord, wherever you may be
When you're reaching for the fruit
I pray you'll fondly think of me
It gets so hard out on the road
But I go it alone 'cause I'm your man
I have got you on my mind
    And my ever lovin' hand
For a moment, you were here
The moment passed and you were gone
Leavin' me to clean the mess
That you clearly helped to cause
When the boys asked how I slept
I'll just look 'em in the eye
Tell them all you'd come to visit
I didn't get a wink of sleep all night
This one here goes out to you
    Lord, wherever you may be
When you're reaching for the fruit
I pray you'll fondly think of me
It gets so hard out on the road
But I go it alone 'cause I'm your man
I have got you on my mind
    And my ever lovin' hand
It gets so hard out on the road
But I go it alone 'cause I'm your man
I have got you on my mind
    And my ever lovin' hand
  7. Peace of Mind

    Lyrics: Peace of Mind

He drinks orange juice and vodka
In the basement while she's talkin'
    To someone long distance
For hours and hours on end
    And as he's slowly sippin'
    He thinks about his children
And the heart attacks that youngest daughter's
    Always given him

    He ain't smoke no marijuana
Since he got on with the railroad
And he's been on with the railroad for
    A long and loathsome while
But the day that he retires
    He'll smoke himself to China
    He'll leave behind his worries
As he races through the skies

    The days are dark
    Down in the holler
Waitin' for the sun to shine
    On the back
    You have been breakin'
    Tryin' to earn
    A peace of mind

She sells Avon to her buddies
    And saves a little money
On the makeup she's been using
    To hide away the years
And she sits and watches TV
    Usually every evening
That there ain't some kind of ballgame
That her daughter has to cheer

She sneaks menthols in the mornin'
While her family's still a snorin'
And as she burns the Eggos
She looks back at her life
That heart she broke in high school
He is singin' on the Opry
She wonders what the hell that she was thinkin at the time

    The days are dark
    Down in the holler
Waitin' for the sun to shine
    On the back
    You have been breakin'
    Tryin' to earn
    A peace of mind

    Their youngest daughter Stella
    She's runnin' with this fella
That he can not stand the thought of
    That he surely does despise
He's told her he best never
See the two of them together
But it's hard to keep an eye on her
When you're workin' all the time

There are things he needs to tend to
And the bills the bank keeps sendin'
Lord the zeroes on the end
Keep pushing further to the right
Like a freight train haulin' sorrow
    And movin' ever onward
    Through the tunnel of forever
    To the never endin' light
  8. All Your'n

    Lyrics: All Your'n

    Drivin' through the roadwork
Oh, the work they took forever on
The road cones blur like memories
Of the miles we shared between
The place you learned to say your prayers
The place I took to prayin'
    Loadin' in and breakin' down
My road dog door deal dreams

    Long before we ever met
    I made up my direction
Long before I knew the half
Of half that I'm sure of now
And though I'd say it ain't the way
    That you'd a-gone about it
You follow me, and lead me on
    And never let me down

So I'll love you 'til my lungs give out
    I ain't lyin'
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine
There ain't two ways around it
There ain't no tryin' 'bout it
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine

    Fried morels and fine hotels
And all that in the middle
Every bite and curtain drawn, I wanna taste with you
The goddess in my days in pen
    The muse I ain't refusin'
The part of me that ain't around
    I'm always talkin' to

So I'll love you 'til my lungs give out
    I ain't lyin'
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine
There ain't two ways around it
There ain't no tryin' 'bout it
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine

So I'll love you 'til my lungs give out
    I ain't lyin'
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine
There ain't two ways around it
There ain't no tryin' 'bout it
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine

No, there ain't two ways around it
There ain't no tryin' 'bout it
    I'm all your'n and you're all mine
  9. Matthew

    Lyrics: Matthew

Works the night shift at the depot
With a pistol and a light
And he guards them rusted missiles
Countin' whitetail to pass the time
And he's worked there for a long while
Since he came home from overseas
Helpin' Kilcorn fight the good fight
And bring Baghdad to its knees
And it was hotter than the mountain
But it weren't so he couldn't stand
And it weren't so much the heat wave
Nearly as much as all the sand
Now his daddy, he's a lockman
With a good leg and a fake
That he got off of a buddy
And a shitshot that he made
And he worked them hands to splinters
And he raised them youngins right
On a little bit of scripture
    And an acreage of paradise
And he'd go out on the weekends
And he played like Clarence White
Clarence, but had a real job
Picked the guitar when there was time
Keeps a trap line in the winter
Keeps a line wet in the spring
On a lock wall fishin' muskie
    With his eldest and Steve
And they swap tales about their raisin'
And they tell the office lies
And they go home when they've the notion
    And the muskie quit bitin'

  8. Long Violent History

    Lyrics: Long Violent History

It's the worst that it's been since the last time it happened
It's happening again right in front of our eyes
    There's updated footage, wild speculation
Tall tales and hearsay and absolute lies

Been passed off as factual when actually, the actual
Causes they're awkwardly blockin' the way
Keeping us all from enjoyin' our evening
Shoving it's roots through the screens in our face

Now, what would you give if you heard my opinion
Conjecturin' on matters that I ain't never dreamed
In all my born days as a white boy from Hickman
Based on the way that the world's been to mе

It's called me belligеrent, it's took me for ignorant
But it ain't never once made me scared just to be
Could you imagine just constantly worryin'
Kickin' and fightin', beggin' to breathe

How many boys could they haul off this mountain
Shoot full of holes, cuffed, and laid in the streets
'Til we come in to town in a stark ravin' anger
Looking for answers and armed to the teeth

30 aught sixes, papaw's old pistol
How many, you reckon, would it be, four or five?
Oh, would that be the start of a long, violent history
Of tuckin' our tails as we try to abide?

Oh, would that be the start of a long, violent history
Of tuckin' our tails as we try to abide?

Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? (2022)

  1. Old Country Church (Hallelujah Version)

Lyrics: Old Country Church (Hallelujah Version)

There's a place dear to me
    Where I'm longing to be
With my friends at the old country church
    There with mother, we went
    And our Sundays were spent
With my friends at the old country church

Precious years of memories (precious years, sweet memories)
Oh, what joy they bring to me
How I long once more to be (how I long to be)
With my friends at the old country church

    As a small country boy
How my heart beat with joy
When I knelt in the old country church
And the Savior above by His wonderful love
Saved my soul in the old country church

Precious years of memories (precious years, sweet memories)
Oh, what joy they bring to me
How I long once more to be (how I long to be)
With my friends at the old country church

How I wish that today all the people would pray
As they prayed in the old country church
    If they'd only confess
    Jesus, surely, would bless
As He did in the old country church

Precious years of memories (precious years, sweet memories)
Oh, what joy they bring to me
How I long once more to be (how I long)
With my friends at the old country church

Precious years of memories (precious years, sweet memories)
Oh, what joy they bring to me
How I long once more to be (how I long)
With my friends at the old country church
With my friends at the old country church

  4. Way of the Triune God (Hallelujah Version)

Lyrics: Way of the Triune God (Hallelujah Version)

Gimme that old time, screaming and shouting
Go up, tell it on the mountain
Faith too strong to be left doubting
    Way of the Triune God

I don't need the pills you take
Just to feel the spirit moving
Brother, I ain't slept in days
All without the drugs you're using

Fit me for the builder's use
Use me for the great commission
As it was and always will
As it is, I'm here to witness

    Old time, screaming and shouting
Go up, tell it on the mountain
Faith too strong to be left doubting
    Way of the Triune God

I don't need the laws of man
Tell me what I ought to do
He retched down and touched my hand
And gave me quite a talkin', too

Gave it to me, strict in charge
    Something simple I could ponder
'Til the role is called on high
'Til we all meet over yonder

    Old time, screaming and shouting
Go up, tell it on the mountain
Faith too strong to be left doubting
    Way of the Triune God

I don't need the pills you take (old time, screaming and shouting)

    Jesus said he'd go before
And come back when the house was finished
All this sin and waging war
    My God's coming

    Old time, screaming and shouting
Go up, tell it on the mountain
Faith too strong to be left doubting

Lyrics: Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? (Jubilee Version)

You tell me there are streets of gold
    And angels in the air
While all that's fine and dandy
And I'm sure it's nice up there
There's just one thing that I need to know
    Before I settle down
Can I take my hounds to Heaven?
Can I hunt on God's ground?

Now you say if I quit drinking
And try to toe the line
I can make it up to glory
At the end of my life
And while whiskey's hard to throw away
It's somethin' I'd try to do
    If I could spend forever
    Runnin' hounds and treein' coons

If I can't take my hounds to Heaven
    If I can't hunt on God's land
I'd rather load my dog box up
And go to Hell with all my friends
I will wake up in the mornin'
And I will follow you to town
If I can take my hounds to Heaven
If I can hunt on God's ground

Now you say if I quit smokin'
And my rough and rowdy ways
    We can hold hands forever
    On streets of gold someday
But the only way I could stand it now
And I hate to say it's true
When you give me a hard time
I can do what I want to do

But if I can't take my hounds to Heaven
    If I can't hunt on God's land
I'd rather load my dog box up
And go to Hell with all my friends
I will wake up in the mornin'

Rustin’ in the Rain (2023)

  1. Rustin' In The Rain

    Lyrics: Rustin' In The Rain

    I have gee'd and haw'd
    Myself into a tizzy
I am yearning for the turning
    In the most peculiar way
    Blame it on my jeans
    Caked in tenant farming
But I can't stand for idle hands
    As the hours waste away
    Let your love light shine
Don't ya hide it 'neath no bushel, baby
    Take 'at wick to task
And work me all night 'neath the flame
    I am yours to use
And I sure wish you would use me
Do not let my heart just fall apart
    Rustin' in the rain
    I'm a hillside plow
Working one way then the other
I don't run around in circles
I work right on up the side
    Startin' at the foot
    Going past the shoulder
    'Til the sweat erodes
    And the whole hill slides
    Let your love light shine
Don't ya hide it 'neath no bushel, baby
    Take 'at wick to task
And work me all night 'neath the flame
    I am yours to use
And I sure wish you would use me
Do not let my heart just fall apart
    Rustin' in the rain
    I have gee'd and haw'd
For you and it sure suits me
    I am pawing with impatience
At the thought of tracin' chains
    I have grit my bit
Right in half from just a-thinkin'
    Of gettin' hunkered down
Tryin' to get up through the hames
    Let your love light shine
Don't ya hide it 'neath no bushel, baby
    Take 'at wick to task
And work me all night 'neath the flame
    I am yours to use
And I sure wish you would use me
Do not let my heart just fall apart
    Rustin' in the rain
Do not let my heart just fall apart
    Rustin' in the rain
  2. Phone Calls and Emails

    Lyrics: Phone Calls and Emails

    Hello, good morning
    I hope you slept well?
I hope that my message gets through
It's so unnerving to get no reply
To the phone calls and emails I'm sending to you

    I'm sure you're busy
    I'd say that you're swamped
Lord knows it's a long row to hoe
But if I've done something that has put you off
I wish that you'd just let me know

    We used to talk daily
    You'd call to check in
    I'd check in on you
    I considered us friends
    Now I'm second-guessing
What I thought to be true
With these phones calls and emails
    I'm sending to you

    We used to talk daily
    You'd call to check in
    I'd check in on you
    I considered us friends
    Now I'm second-guessing
What I thought to be true
With these phone calls and emails
    I'm sending to you

Are you preferring I left you alone?
Just answer with what I should do
    I'm sorry, I'll quit now
    With bombarding your phone
With these phone calls and emails
    I'm sending to you

    These phone calls and emails
    I'm sending to you
  3. Luke 2:8-10

    Lyrics: Luke 2:8-10

    Luke Chapter 2, Verses 8 to 10

And there were in the same country
    Shepherds abiding in the field
Keeping watch over their flock by night
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them
And the glory of the Lord shone 'round about them
And they were so afraid, and the angel said unto them
"Fear not, for behold I bring tidings of great joy
    Which shall be unto all..."

Is it a bird, is it a plane
Is it perhaps I'm going insane
From all night abidin' the field?
Look at the thing up on the ridge
    W-w-what d'ya reckon it is?
    It's moving, I think it's on wheels

Is it a flame hooked to a cart?
Come to a "whoa" there in the dark
Why in the world would you move such a thing?
Lo, enough, hark, I could've sworn
    I heard a shout, what's going on?
It's closer, it's coming our way

Daniel, get up (Daniel, get up)
Gather the sheep (gather the sheep)
Tell them there's no time to sleep (no time to sleep)
My God, it's the end of the world (my God, it's the end of the world)

I'm so afraid, but I was right
It was a shout come from the light
It is a woman on fire with two wings
And though she burns, it's seems to me
She's just as calm as she can be
Trying to get us to hear what she sings

Daniel, get up (Daniel, get up)
Gather the sheep (gather the sheep)
Tell them there's no time to sleep (no time to sleep)
My God, it's the end of the world (my God, it's the end of the world)

Daniel, get up (Daniel, get up)
Gather the sheep (gather the sheep)
Tell them there's no time to sleep (no time to sleep)
My God, it's the end of the world (my God, it's the end of the world)

My God, it's the end of the world (my God, it's the end of the world)
My God, it's the end of the world
  4. Help Me Make It Through the Night

Lyrics: Help Me Make It Through the Night

Take the ribbon from your hair
Shake it loose and let it fall
    Dancin' soft against my skin
Like the shadows on the wall
Come and lay down by my side
    'Til the early morning light
All I'm takin' is your time
Oh, help me make it through the night
    I don't care who's right or wrong
And I don't need to understand
    Let the devil take tomorrow
'Cause tonight I need a friend
    Yesterday is dead and gone
    And tomorrow's out of sight
It's so sad to be alone
Oh, help me make it through the night
    I don't care who's right or wrong
And I don't need to understand
    Let the devil take tomorrow
'Cause tonight I need a friend
Ooh, yesterday is dead and gone
    And tomorrow's out of sight
It's so sad to be alone
Oh, help me make it through the night
  5. Percheron Mules

    Lyrics: Percheron Mules

    Mammoth Jacks and Percheron mares
Grazing up and down my dreams
    Nothin' less than sixteen hands
I don't wanna drag my feet
    Anything more small than that
It ain't worth the feed it takes
Give me big 'ol Mammoth Jacks
Throwin' mules the size of tanks

Yeah, a team the size of tanks
And a hundred head of goat
When I get the pigpen built
    I'm a find a couple shoats
And I'll name 'em after y'all
And they'll all look just like me
Rollin' 'round a pile of shit
Just as happy as can be

    Mammoth Jacks and Percheron mares
    (Mammoth Jacks and Percheron mares)
Grazing up and down my dreams
    Nothin' less than sixteen hands
    (Sixteen hands, sixteen hands)
I don't wanna drag my feet
(He don't wanna drag his feet)
    Anything more small than that
    (Anything more small than that)
It ain't worth the feed it takes
(It ain't worth the feed it takes)
Give me big 'ol Mammoth Jacks
    (Mammoth Jacks, Mammoth Jacks)
Throwin' mules the size of tanks

Yeah, a team of Percheron mules
    Pullin' rebuilt number nine
Slidin' stone boats 'cross the hill
For to stack the stones so high
I don't mind to beat the rock
But my back can't take the haul
But with these here, Percheron mules
It ain't troublin' me at all (hey!)

(They don't need their oil changed)
They don't burn gasoline (ow ow ow ow)
They stock in all the compost that I need
    (Compost that he needs)

    Mammoth Jacks and Percheron mares
    (Mammoth Jacks and Percheron mares)
Grazing up and down my dreams
    Nothin' less than sixteen hands
    (Sixteen hands, sixteen hands)
I don't wanna drag my feet
(He don't wanna drag his feet)
    Anything more small than that
    (Anything more small than that)
It ain't worth the feed it takes
(It ain't worth the feed it takes)
Give me big 'ol Mammoth Jacks
    (Mammoth Jacks, Mammoth Jacks)
Throwin' mules the size of tanks

Give me big 'ol Mammoth Jacks
(Give him big 'ol Mammoth Jacks)
Throwin' mules the size of tanks
  6. In Your Love

    Lyrics: In Your Love

    I will wait for you
'Til the sun turns into ashes
And bows down to the moon
    I will wait for you

    It's a long, hard war
Oh, but I can grin and bear it
'Cause I know what the hell I'm fighting for
And I will wait for you

We were never made to run forever
We were just meant to go long enough
To find what we were chasin' after
I believe I found it here in your love

    I will stand my ground
I'm a bad man looking for takers
    You're the finest thing around
So I will stand my ground

    'Cause it's cold out there
And you know some men search for ages
For the love that I have found
So I will stand my ground

We were never made to run forever
We were just meant to go long enough
To find what we were chasin' after
I believe I found it here in your love

Honey, I will wait for you
Honey, I will stand my ground

    I will work for you
'Til my hands are tired and bleedin'
I know what it is from us I'm needin'
    I will work for you

    Like a team of mules
Pulling hell off from its hinges
It's for love that I'll keep tendin'
    I will work for you

We were never made to run forever
We were just meant to go long enough
To find what we were chasin' after
I believe I found it here in your love

Honey, I will wait for you
Honey, I will stand my ground
    I will work for you
    I will stand my ground
  7. Space and Time

    Lyrics: Space and Time

I never wanna leave this world
    Without sayin' I love you
Without sayin' what you mean to me
You know you make me happy
Oh, when we share this space and time
Want you to know you shape this heart of mine
And I never wanna leave this world, oh
    Without sayin' I love you

Oh, and out in the woods
This picture is clear to me
I owe my life to even my enemies
The ones who have loved me, the ones who have tried
Their grips on my heart, and their grips on my mind

The stranger I pass, my momma, brothers
Friends and my father, they're God undercover
I'm tellin' you now in case I must go
    Want you to know

I never wanna leave this world
    Without sayin' I love you
Without sayin' what you mean to me
You know you make me happy
Oh, when we share this space and time
Want you to know you shape this heart of mine
And I never wanna leave this world, oh
    Without sayin' I love you

I never wanna leave this world
    Without sayin' I love you
Without sayin' what you mean to me
You know you make me happy
Oh, when we share this space and time
Want you to know you shape this heart of mine
And I never wanna leave this world, oh
    Without sayin' I love you

  1. Eatin' Big Time

    Lyrics: Eatin' Big Time

    One, two, three, four

I wasn't braced and kissed my face with the scope of my rifle
I had shot it from a blind, as in you'd be blind not to see
That there's a man in the doorway of a motherfuckin' mansion
Aiming at the feeder where you'd sat to take a feast

    That's what I said, that's what I did
And it did not cut one corner
As I carved that fat-neck-mother right down to the bone
I let him hang for several days
And then I cut off hide and scriffin'
I cut it thin, then throw it in a Tupperware to soak

I fried some pieces while I worked
It tasted like I'd made it
Fried in Wagner casted butter in a quiet country place
With albums gold and platinum overflowin' to the ceiling
Eatin' big time is a feelin' with the friends that I have made

Keep my time on my Weiss
    Ye goddamn right, I'm flexin'
'Cause a thousand-dollar watch is fine enough flex for me
Have you ever got to hold and blow a thousand fucking dollars?
It runs for 40 hours, and then it winds itself to sleep

It's fought for like a bitch, and it's a bitch to keep it goin'
When they ain't nobody knowin' any prayer you've ever sang
See me now, I'm on the sow, and I'm ridin' to your city
Eatin' big time, ain't she pretty, ain't she witty, ain't she great?

Ain't she great, ain't she grand?
    In my world, she's irreplaceable
I'm her surfboard in the kitchen
    My blessings come in waves
She's my rebirth, she's my lemonade
    My gravy and my biscuits
Mama, I've been out there hunting
I'ma need you to make a plate

She pets my head and whispers
You poor thing, you must be famished
I just knew that this would happen, I got all the fixin's made
I'll get tick-full 'fore I ever pull myself off of this table
Eatin' big time, ain't she pretty? Just rollin' in the shade
Eatin' big time in the holler, ain't it lovely, ain't it great?
  2. Cuttin' Teeth

    Lyrics: Cuttin' Teeth

He was spinnin' wheels, makin' deals
    Wild-eyed in his 20s
With nothin' in the way of work he was ever fit to do
It was for the birds, he worked with words
The thing is, words work funny
You weld 'em right, you know they're liable to affect the way you move

    Frontin' him, a country band
A buncha rockin' barkin' deadbeats, man
He played a gig with us one night
    When he was cuttin' teeth

    Hustle high, hustle low
    Hearken out that band window
The price of gas is getting low
In the pocket of the seat
Of his pants, he has had tightenin' 'round his body
Livin' off tavern's fare, drowning in the grease

    Frontin' him, a country band
    Roaddoggin' in a stripped-out van
Bummin' powder in the bar light
    When they were cuttin' teeth

You can yell, you can croon
You can reach the fire code of any room
With a catchy song or two, if they're sang in key
There's room for error if the band is there
In a way, it's 'bout like baseball
    He swings a bat left-handed
    He's gonna walk at least

    Frontin' him, a country band
A buncha West Virginia deadbeats, man
He split the door with us one night
    When he was cuttin' teeth
He played a gig with us one night
    When he was cuttin' teeth
  3. Oneida

    Lyrics: Oneida

Back before, birthdays were something she dreads
Back before children had settled her friends
Back when the radio spoke to her heart
Oh, girls, they wanna have fun

Oneida, I know that I'm younger than most
But I'm willing, if you've got the time
    To buy us some wine

I lay here awake and I laugh at her jokes
She is referencing movies I'm too young to know
And I'm letting her lead as we dance in the dark
Oh, girl, I'm fallin' in love

Oneida, I know that I'm younger than most
But I'm willing, if you've got the time
    To buy us some wine
    I'll bring my guitar
I've been working on learning that song you've been dying to sing
    About weddings and rings

Pleading my case with the bro at the door
Buddy, I know we've been through this before
You can't let me go in, but if I wait outside
Will you give her a message for me?

Tell her, "Oneida, I know that I'm younger than most
But I'm willing, if you've got the time
    To buy us some wine
    I'll bring my guitar
I've been working on learning that song you've been dying to sing
    About weddings and rings
I'll strum in the back and come in where I can
Harmonize on a line or two
    But this song's all you"
  4. Getting to the Bottom

    Lyrics: Getting to the Bottom

I wonder how the old folks are at home
I wonder if it's hotter than the devil's dick on fire
In a wool sock that is soaked, I mean completely doused
In kerosene, set ablaze the way it's here right now

I wonder if my friends are fast asleep
Or are they off together somewhere stumblin' through the streets?
Makin' memories that will be forgotten with the moon
Leavin' them to wonder why their legs and arms are bruised

Do their livers scream for water? Are their brains about to swell
Through the soft part of their temple while they grind their teeth like hell?
Are they talking o'er each other? Leavin' neary a stone unturned
Getting to the bottom of an angst hard-fought to learn

I never wanna get that way again
Feelin' like my head's a house with a roommate movin' in
Who's insistently talkin', never slowing down
Possessed with evil urges, burn it to the ground

With a tongue twitch like a lizard and a grin just like a rat
Backed against a corner after pestering the cat
Preparing to be peeled open just as easy as dessert
Getting to the bottom of an angst hard-fought to learn

The pheromones of this city secrete a sand quick set
To call for it from the recessed of my mind, the fear of death
The thrill, my heart my thump so hard it breaks a joist or worse
Getting to the bottom of an angst hard-fought to learn

Getting to the bottom of an angst hard-fought to learn
  5. Bitin' List

    Lyrics: Bitin' List

To put it plain, I just don't like you
Not a thing about the way you is
And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You're high on my bitin' list
To put it plain, I just don't like you
Not a thing about the way you is
And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You're high on my bitin' list
Yeah, you're high on the list
Of people gettin' bit if they gave me a week or two
Before my brain was so inflamed the spirit left my shoes
    I'd wanna kiss my wife
I'd wanna hug my baby, but when my goodbyes are through
Foamin' at the mouth, high in the hackles
    Mother****er, I'ma come for you
To put it plain, I just don't like you
Not a thing about the way you is
And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You're high on my bitin' list
To put it plain, I just don't like you
I never really have and I never really did
And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You're high on my bitin' list
    Seizure fraught spinal rot
I'd wanna be with the ones I love
But in the light of the moon
With everybody sleepin', I'd draw me a little bit of blood
With time so small, my list ain't many
My list is short and few
And the thing about it is
Everybody on the list is comin' in after you
To put it plain, I just don't like you
Not a thing about the way you is
And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You're high on my bitin' list
To put it plain, I just don't like you
Not a thing about the way you is
And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You're high on my bitin' list
You're high on my bitin' list
You're high on my bitin' list
  6. Nose On The Grindstone

    Lyrics: Nose On The Grindstone

Daddy worked like a mule minin' Pike County coal
He messed up his back and couldn't work anymore
He said, "One of these days you'll get out of these hills
"Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills"
"See, the ways of this world will just bring you to tears
"Keep the Lord in your heart and you'll have nothin' to fear
"Live the best that you can and don't lie and don't steal
"Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills"
Daddy I've been tryin', I just can't catch a break
There's too much in this world I can't seem to shake
But I remember your words, Lord, they bring me the chills
"Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills"
"Keep in mind that a man's just as good as his word
"It takes twice as long to build bridges you've burned
"And there's hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal
"Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills"
Daddy, I've been tryin', I just can't catch a break
There's too much in this world I can't seem to shake
But I remember your words, Lord, they bring me the chills
"Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills"
"Keep your nose on the grindstone
  7. Watch Out

    Lyrics: Watch Out

    (One, two, three, four)
    Watch out
    Watch out
    Watch out
    Watch out

    Watch out where you reach
    You could come back penny-in-handed
In the rocks and weeds and the woodpile
    There's copperheads everywhere
And watch out where you sneak
In the woods without a little listenin'
    You don't wanna creep
And spook you up a momma bear

This one here, it's called pointer
    Cohosh to be more proper
Mikey called it pointer, so that's pointer there to you
I didn't know its actual name
    Was really black cohosh
    That's another little interesting thing
That I learned off of Mikey too

    Watch out where you reach
    You could come back penny-in-handed
In the rocks and weeds and the woodpile
    There's copperheads everywhere
And watch out where you sneak
In the woods without a little whistlin'
    You don't wanna creep
And spook you up a momma bear

    (Watch out where you reach)
(In the rocks and the weeds and the woodpile)
    (Watch out where you sneak)
    (You don't wanna creep)
    (Watch out)

This one here, it's an oyster
And it is your daddy's favorite
From the final frost 'til the first one come
And you can usually find a few
They got gills that look like still, taste just like oysters
They grow on trees standin' and a rottin'
And you know what you got to do

    Watch out where you reach
    You could come back penny-in-handed
In the rocks and weeds and the woodpile
    There's copperheads everywhere
And watch out where you sneak
In the woods without a little listenin'
    You don't wanna creep
And spook you up a momma bear

    (Watch out where you reach)
(In the rocks and the weeds and the woodpile)
    (Watch out where you sneak)
    (You don't wanna creep)
    (Watch out where you reach)

    (Watch out where you reach)
    (Watch out where you sneak)
    Watch out
    Watch out
  8. Down Under

    Lyrics: Down Under

Down under is forever and a day
Down under is forever and a day
Koala bears get livid when they don't get eucalyptus
    Most of 'em carry syphilis
    Or chlamydia what's the difference
All I know is I don't want no koala cuddlin' up to me
I can see it fine from here it is a pretty cute koala
Down under is forever and a day
Down under is forever and a day
Kangaroos can whoop up on ya
They'd rather fight than watch ya
I know they look tame and dainty but I'll tell ya now ya oughta
Take some care because they're deer
    Evolved to bеtter boxers
They don’t takе to whisperin' nothings
    They’d punch a crowdin' talker
Down under is forever and a day
It ain’t no wonder why more folks don’t find the time
'Cause it takes time to get down under
Things out there can kill ya
From the critters to the thunder
It's been forever and a day since I have been down under
Down under is forever and a day
Down under is forever and a day
    There’s always somethin’ thrilling
To get your heart a racin'
No shit I've had the notion
But that ain't what I’m chasin'
And life is more than treasures born
From sense a light and pleasure
And I would not take a thing
    From my journey out under
Vegemite and flying kites the opposite way
    With crocodilian convicts
    And the criminally insane
Down under is forever and a day
It ain't no wonder why more folks don’t find the time
'Cause it takes time to get down under
Things out there can kill ya worse
    Than critters and the thunder
It's been forever and a day since I have been down under
Down under is forever and a day
Down under is forever and a day
Down under is forever and a day
Down under is forever and a day
    Forever and a day
    Forever and a day
    Forever and a day
    Forever and a day
    Forever and a day
    Forever and a day
  9. Poachers

    Lyrics: Poachers

I ain't bad, I'm just lazy, and I ain't got around to it
I shot it on Wednesday, and it's almost the next
How long do I have to call it in and be legal
Or is it sufficient if I honor my tags?
I was askin' myself as I explained to Dylan
The importance of havin' your license, you see
'Cause you never can tell when a warden will roll in
They got more authority than the great God, I think

I can hear 'em now talkin', ah, God, it is scandalous
They were took in for poachin', they were both packin' heat
They were crossin' state lines, they were drivin' a Caddy
With a cab full of dogs and a trunk full of meat

They'd think we were high, they'd say I was slippin'
Trill told me 'bout somethin' that his buddies call lean
It sounds like a drag, I like my drugs, methy
But if I's runnin' with him, they'd suspect it of me

I can hear 'em now talkin', ah, God, it is scandalous
His Papaw'd be rollin', I don't know where he strayed
I know that you'd know him, he's the one on the rad'ya
He's the one with the vid'ya of the coal minin' gays

I can hear 'em now talkin', ah, God, it is scandalous
He could have been somethin' if he weren't such a mess
If he hadn't went broke, God cancel him sideways
We lost us another to the others, I guess

I told Trill of a place where they took your belongings
And they sold 'em at auction twice a year for the state
They'd get a 32 North Star, some pistols, a cooler
The weed would walk off, and the dogs they would take

And if they couldn't relearn 'em, my God, it is scandalous
They'd go to a shelter, they'd give 'em away
    A dog that's worth stacks, a one-in-a-million
The pride of the kennel, McDowell Kennels' face

I hope we keep all our dogs, I'm too busy for prison
And if you get to squintin' in my own unique way
I'm pretty enough that, God, it'd be scandalous
I'm a miner at heart, so I'd dig out a way
And I'd stand there like Dufresne, far enough from the searchlight
And flip off you bastards in the sewage and rain
I'd howl like a dog, I'd sound like a real one
I'd burn like a candle and grin in your face

I'd howl like a dog, I'd sound like a real one
I'd burn like a candle and grin in your face
  10. Snipe Hunt

    Lyrics: Snipe Hunt

    (One, two, one-two-three-four)

I flung the door open and let the heat rise
To heat up the world 'cause I thought it was mine
And all the while, all my plants froze inside
'Cause there's only so much to go 'round
And it took me some tries and a whole lotta kindling
But when the lesson arrived, it only took me a minute
To learn there are some things are better off freezing
I can tell you a few that I've found

Hate is a thing that can poison your veins
And get in your eyes when you're sweating on stage
Shifting around for a clock on the wall
    Tell you it's almost over
Vans that keep rolling and times for the birds
The chirp in your ears, all the rumors they heard
Flying above all the good in this world
    Shitting on cattle and clover

Now when I was a young boy, I thought I could track
And an old-timer sat down and reached me a sack
And he told me all of the knowledge I lacked
On an ornery ol' thing called a Snipe

He picked me up on a Friday, and he dropped me in Charley
Told me when he'd be back, and he went off to party
And I sat on the hill like a Jeremiah Johnson
And I froze my dumb ass off all night

And that's the way that I feel when I look at our past
And the handshakes you gave me, if you're callin' them that
And the snickers you tried to pass off as laughs
And the way your eyes never met mine

Paranoia's a thing that you're makin' when sleep
Ain't a thing you recall, ain't a habit you keep
One ol' boy's nightmare is another fool's dream
It's all in the way that you hold her
Hotels are lonely, I reckon I'd know
I've spent many of night in between shows
Looking at paint as it dries on the wall
On a booger you just painted over

Life reminds me of a card game we played as a kid
Where you laid down the deck 'til you got to the end
Early on, there's a joker got lost 'neath the fridge
Over time, all the queens moved in with him

And I'd say the boy, had him an absolute ball
But he ruined the card game for all us involved
And I let it take me over like kudzu in Georgia
And I hope you don't do that again
  11. Tirtha Yatra

    Lyrics: Tirtha Yatra

    I wanna go to India
Put faces to paper, put visuals to words that I've read
Get a better understandin' of the culture that's surroundin'
All the scriptures I've been poundin', watch 'em play out inside my head

    I'd go to Kurukshetra
You know, I couldn't even tell you if I am or not pronouncin' it right
But comin' from a cousin lovin' clubfoot somethin'-somethin'
Backwood searcher, I would hope that you'd admire the try

I'd go to all the places
    Where Nurada stood
    I'd read the Bhagavad Gita
I'd read the song by God

    You know the Bhagavad Gita
You know, the Gita's just a chapter in an epic 'bout a footbridge wide
I'd love to tell ya 'bout it, though I'm 'fraid it'd take forever
I'm 'fraid it'd take forever, and I'd hate to take up all of your time

    But anyways, I read it
I read it to the credits, and Vyasa wrote it masterfully
It took a little under two years for me to make it through
But now I'm here and tellin' you it changed me metaphysically

It taught me all about Dharma
The thing I ought to do
'Til the big man dances and starts it all anew (start again)

It taught me all about Dharma
The thing I ought to do
Until the big man dances and starts it all anew

    I wanna Tirtha Yatra
Roll like the Pandavas with my brothers and my mom and wife
All the boys could bring their ladies, 'cause the one that Indra gave me
Is the momma to my babies and I ain't about to split my nights

    It wouldn't be all different
To how we're actually livin' 'cept we'd leave behind all our merch
But we'd bring along our fiddles, basses and rental guitars and mandolins
'Cause that's the way that Dharma works

    We'd play Louisville Breakdown
    We'd play Shelvin Rock
    We'd sing Hare Krishna
We'd play a song by God
  12. Tomcat and a Dandy

    Lyrics: Tomcat and a Dandy

Back when I was young and gay, in the fledgling of my prime
Back then, when I blew through all my time
You met me like a gurgling spring
    And I a stream nearby
    Hardly even noticing it passing

I'd court the fairest far and wide
I'd walk the hills and ridges
I met them in their parlor rooms a-fancy
I'd drink and swarp, swarp and spark
Through all the towns I'd ride
And went about a tomcat and a dandy

    From Catlettsburg to Bluefield, boys
I've seen and had a time
I gave my all and took my pleasures randy
Toe to toe, cheek to cheek
And waltz on a switchblade knife
I went about a tomcat and a dandy

When the curtain falls on the part I play
Too soon for the ones that knowed me
Raise a toast and toss me roses from the balcony
Let the thorn and flower and the warm applause
    Be right and proper eulogy
Not a dry eye 'mongst the tomcats and the dandies
  13. Dirty Ought Trill

    Lyrics: Dirty Ought Trill

See the malligator on the passenger side
Uzi is a bad dog, Uzi gonna bite
If you ever get the vibe you wanna fuck around and find
    Gib laut

Drag you out a hole, run you up a tree
Cut it down with his own bare teeth
Hit you in the mouth, so copperhead mean
Drag you to the feet of Trill

Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill
Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill
Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still
'Neath the trees when leaves all die

Raised in the bricks where the blue lights scream
Somethin' like a beagle with a fever dream
To getcha in the grips of their little saw teeth
Or hunt ya 'til they wear ya down

He kept his head down and hustled like he's haulin' mail
Circled back and bobbin' 'til they lost the trail
Watchin' in the thicket as they wag their tails
    Lookin' like a punk-ass clown

Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill
Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill
Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still
'Neath the trees when leaves all die

(Man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill)
(Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill)
(Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still)
(Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill)
(Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill)
(Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still)
(Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill)
(Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill)
(Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still), Still

He said, "Hunt ya up a plan, track it to the end
Run it through the valley o'er the ridge and in a den
Fight it like O'Malley 'til ya get the win
Until ya do, brother, don't slow down"

Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill
Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill
Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still
'Neath the trees when leaves all die
Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill
Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill
Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still (still)

(Ain't a man in the holler like Dirty Ought Trill)

(Huntin' them white tail ruttin' on the hill)
(Throwin' that lead, layin' 'em still)

Drag ya out a hole, run you up a tree
Cut it down with his own bare teeth
Hit you in the mouth, so copperhead mean
Drag you to the feet of Trill
See the malligator on the passenger side
Uzi is a bad dog, who's he gonna bite
If he ever get the vibe, you wanna fuck around and find
