Delta Dawn (1972)

  1. Delta Dawn

    Lyrics: Delta Dawn

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say, he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

She's 41 and her daddy still calls her baby
All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy
'Cause she walks down town with a suitcase in her hand
Looking for a mysterious dark-haired man

In her younger days, they called her Delta Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
And promised her he'd take her for his bride

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?
  2. New York City Song

    Lyrics: New York City Song

I'm sittin' in this New York City hotel room alone
Wishin' I was somewhere else or on my way back home
Nashville Tennessee I know that's where I do belong
Cause I don't know no New York City song

They know I'm from Dixie when I open up my mouth
They don't treat the ladies here the way they do down south
I thought I could make it here but I can't get along
Cause I don't know no New York City song

And Lord I'd like to tell you just how much I'd like to leave
Cause in my mind that south bound song is tuggin' on my sleeve
New York City ain't the place a country girl should be
New York City ain't the place for me

Today I walked a New York City avenue downtown
I've never seen so many people hurryin' around
And when I smile they look as if to say that smiling's wrong
No I don't know no New York City song

I'm sittin' in this New York City hotel room alone
Wishin' I was somewhere else or on my way back home
Nashville Tennessee I know that's where I do belong
Cause I don't know no New York City song

Cause I don't know no New York City song
  3. Smell the Flowers
  4. If You Touch Me (You’ve Got to Love Me)

Lyrics: If You Touch Me (You’ve Got to Love Me)

Well, she packed my bags and kicked me out
When we were havin' bad times
Looking back I can see it was over nothin'
Since then there's been too much red wine
And women messin' up my mind

But nothin' can compare with baby's lovin'
At two o'clock this mornin' I made up my mind
I'm gonna go back home to my sweet baby
I'm lookin' though the window at the city for the last time

Lord knows this life, it'll drive me crazy
Well, I walked out on the highway caught a semi headed home
I hope she'll take me back oh Lord I'm prayin'
Now I'm standin' at the front door hopin' I'll find her all alone

Then I heard her sweet voice sayin'
And she said if you touch me you've got to love me
And if you love me you'll have to stay with me forever
And I'll forgive you and love will be like it should be

So if you touch me you've got to love me
If you touch me you've got to love me
  5. He’s All I Got

    Lyrics: He’s All I Got

Well I said, "Friend don't take him he's all I've got
Please don't take his love away from me
I'm a beggin' to you friend don't take him he's all I've got
He's everything in life I'll ever need"

He is life oh when I wanna live
He's everything to me in life that life can give
He's my water oh when I need to drink
He's the first thought in my mind each time I try to think

Let me tell you now, "Friend don't take him he's all I've got
Please don't take his love away from me
I'm a beggin' to you friend don't take him he's all I've got
He's everything in life I'll never gonna need"

He's my fingers when I want to feel
He's the only thing in life to me that's really real
He is love he's all the love I know
He could kiss the ground in the wintertime and make a flower grow

Let me tell you now, "Friend don't take him he's all I've got
Please don't take his love away from me
I'm a beggin' to you friend don't take him he's all I've got
He's everything in life I'll ever need"

Let me tell you now, "Friend don't take him he's all I've got
Please don't take his love away"
  6. The Jamestown Ferry

    Lyrics: The Jamestown Ferry

He just caught the Jamestown Ferry
It's not a hot day in January
Like he said it'd be if he ever left me
A case of gone is all he carried
As he got on the Jamestown Ferry
He said that gone is all he'd ever be
Didn't think that he'd leave me
After he saying how much he needs me
But the fact still remains I sitting her all alone
Missing the love of my baby
Lord it's about to drive me crazy
He was the sweetest piece of heaven I've ever known
He just caught the Jamestown Ferry
It's not a hot day in January
Like he said it'd be if he ever left me
A case of gone is all he carried
As he got on the Jamestown Ferry
He said that gone is all he'd ever be
As I walk through his kingdom of Honky Tonks and Bars
I remember how he hold me and comfort me with talk
He didn't curse with every breath
He had a soothing southern drawl
He made me feel like a lady through it all.
He just caught the Jamestown Ferry
It's not a hot day in January
Like he said it'd be if he ever left me
A case of gone is all he carried
As he got on the Jamestown Ferry
He said that gone is all he'd ever be
He just caught the Jamestown Ferry
It's not a hot day in January
Like he said it'd be if he ever left me
  7. Loving You Could Never Be Better

Lyrics: Loving You Could Never Be Better

Here we are again tonight alone just us two
Where the lights're dim and true love is coming through
There's no one else in this whole world as far as we're concerned
We built ourselves a fire so let it burn
Tomorrow night we'll meet again to once more fan the flame
'Cause loving you the way I do stays the same
This love of ours is just as strong as any vow could be
And love could never be better for you and me
When you look at me like you do right now I go to pieces
Because I know what's on your mind it's just me
You've got that love-me-look in your eyes like you've had so many time and how
Loving you could never be better than it is right now
    You've got that love-me-look...
Loving you could never be better than it is right now
  8. Soul Song

    Lyrics: Soul Song

    Mhm mhm mhm
You're my soul song my everything-that-I-do song
My pick-me-up-when-I'm-blue song that's why I sing all the time
You're my soul song and that's why I call you my solid-gold song
Nothin' in the world could ever go wrong as long as you are mine

Never in the world have I seen anybody like you in all my time
You give me a feel good feelin' through and through and it's so fine
I'm up with the sun cause I don't wanna waste it
I love you so much I can almost taste it
I can sit still when I look up and see you comin' I start hummin' hmm
You're my soul song my keep-me-safe-from-all-harm song
My shelter-from-all-storm song that's why I sing all the time
You're my soul song my keep-me-warm-when-I'm-cold song
Nothin' in the world could ever go wrong as long as you are mine
    You're my soul song...
  9. Love’s the Answer

    Lyrics: Love’s the Answer

If you think it's hard in this day and time
To hold your man like I been holding mine
There's no secret just some little things to do
It worked for me and it's 'bound to work for you

A loving smile will start his day out right
A goodbye kiss will bring him home at night
Reach out to him when he needs a helping hand
Touch him gently so, he knows you understand

Be proud of him when you know he's done his best
Let him know you think, he's better than the rest
If you wanna hold your man, this is the way
Love him more today than you did yesterday
Love's the answer, love's the answer

Be proud of him when you know he's done his best
Let him know you think, he's better than the rest
If you wanna hold your man, this is the way
Love him more today than you did yesterday
Love's the answer, love's the answer
Love's the answer, love's the answer
  10. The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.

Lyrics: The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.

    Shine on me sunshine
    Walk with me world
    It's a skippidity-do-da day
I'm the happiest girl, in the whole U.S.A.

    Good morning morning
    Hello sunshine
    Wake up sleepy head
Why'd we move that bojangle clock
So far away from the bed

    Just one more minute
    That's why we moved it
    One more hug or two
Do you love waking up next to me
As much as I love waking up next to you

    You make the coffee
    I'll make the bed
    I'll fix your lunch
    If you"ll fix mine

    Now tell me the truth
Do these old shoes look funny
    Honey
    It's almost nine

    Now you be careful
    Gotta go I love you
    Have a beautiful day,
And kiss the happiest girl, In the whole U.S.A.

    Skippidity-do-da
    Thank you oh Lord
    For making him for me
And thank you for letting life turn out the way

That I always thought it could be
There once was a time when I could not imagine
How it would feel to say
I'm happiest girl, in the whole U.S.A

    Now shine on me sunshine
    Walk with me world
    It's a skippidity-do-da day
I'm the happiest girl, in the whole U.S.A.

    Now shine on me sunshine
    Walk with me world
    It's a skippidity-do-da day
I'm the happiest girl, in the whole U.S.A.

    Now shine on me sunshine
    Walk with me world
    It's a skippidity-do-da day
I'm the happiest girl, in the whole U.S.A.
  11. I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry

Lyrics: I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill he sounds too blue to fly
That midnight train is whining low I'm so lonesome I could cry
I've never seen a night so long when time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud to hide its face and cry
Did you ever see a robin weep when leaves began to die
That means he's lost the will to live I'm so lonesome I could cry
The silence of a falling star lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are I'm so lonesome I could cry
I'm so lonesome I could cry

What's Your Mama's Name (1973)

  1. What’s Your Mama’s Name

    Lyrics: What’s Your Mama’s Name

    What's your mama's name, child?
    What's your mama's name?

    Thirty some odd years ago
A young man came to Memphis
    Asking 'bout a rose
That use to blossom in his world
    People never took the time
To mind the young man's questions
Until one day they heard him ask
    A little green eyed girl

    What's your mama's name, child?
    What's your mama's name?
    Does she ever talk about
    A place called New Orleans?
    Has she ever mentioned
    A man named Buford Wilson?
    What's your mama's name, child?
    What's your mama's name?

    Twenty some odd years ago
    A drunkard down in Memphis
Lost a month of life and labor
    To the county jail
    Just because he asked
    A little green-eyed girl a question
And offered her a nickel's worth
    Of candy if she'd tell

A year and some odd days ago
An old man died in Memphis
    Just another wayward soul
    The county had to claim
Inside the old man's ragged coat
    They found a faded letter
It said, "You have a daughter
And her eyes are Wilson green"

    What's your mama's name, child?
    What's your mama's name?
    Does she ever talk about
    A place called New Orleans?
    Has she ever mentioned
    A man named Buford Wilson?
    What's your mama's name, child?
    What's your mama's name?

    What's your mama's name, child?
    What's your mama's name?
  2. Horseshoe Bend

    Lyrics: Horseshoe Bend

It's been a Saturday everyday and a whole month of Sundays
And I get Saturday everyday he's gone

Horseshoe Bend old friend that's been so long since we saw him
When he laid me down upon your banks and made this girl a woman
As the Virgin Mother sang us a song
Horseshoe Bend he's just like you old river he'll keep rolling
And I'll keep praying someday he'll come home

It's been a Saturday everyday and a whole month of Sundays
And I get Saturday everyday he's gone

Here comes Frank again old friend and there ain't no sign of him
But just because I can't see him don't mean I forgot him
And I'll keep praying someday he'll come home

It's been a Saturday everyday and a whole month of Sundays
And I get Saturday everyday he's gone

Horseshoe Bend old friend that's been so long since we saw him
When he laid me down upon your banks and made this girl a woman
As the Virgin Mother sang us a song
Horseshoe Bend he's just like you old river he'll keep rolling
And I'll keep praying someday he'll come home

It's been a Saturday everyday and a whole month of Sundays
And I get Saturday everyday he's gone
It's been a Saturday everyday and a whole month of Sundays
And I get Saturday everyday he's gone

It's been a Saturday everyday and a whole month of Sundays
And I get Saturday everyday he's gone
  3. The Chokin’ Kind

    Lyrics: The Chokin’ Kind

I only meant to love you don't you know it babe
Why couldn't you be contented with the love I gave?
I've given you my heart and now you want my mind
Your love scares me to death boy it's the choking kind

You can kill a girl with bullets, poison or a knife
But it hurts her more to take her pride and run her life
Whatever it is you want boy I hope you find
But that Hat don't fit my head it's the choking kind

When you fall in love again now take a tip from me
If you don't like the peaches walk on by the tree
Find what you want and keep it treat it sweet and kind
But let it breathe don't make your love the choking kind
But let it breathe don't make your love the choking kind
  4. California Cotton Fields

    Lyrics: California Cotton Fields

My driftin' mem'ry goes back to the spring of '43
When I was just a child in mama's arms
My daddy plowed the ground and prayed that some day he could leave
This run down mortaged Oklahoma farm
Then one night I heard my daddy sayin' to my mama
He finally saved enough for us to go
California was his dream a paradise wall he had seen
Pictures in magazines that told him so

    California cottonfields
Where labor camps were filled with worried men with broken dreams
California cottonfields was as close to wealth as daddy ever came
Almost everything we had to sow we left behind
From my daddy's plows to the fruit that mama canned
Some folks came to say farewell and see what all we had to sell
Some just came to shake my daddy's hand
The Model A was loaded down and California bound
And a change of luck was just four days away
But the only change that I remember seeing for my daddy
Was when his dark hair had turned to silver gray
    California cottonfields...
    California cottonfields...

  6. Blood Red and Goin’ Down

Lyrics: Blood Red and Goin’ Down

That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down
That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down

    Daddy said, "Now come girl
We're headed down the road to Augusta"
And frankly through his clenched teeth
He called Mama's name and then he cussed her

    He said, "Girl, you're young
But some dude has come along and stole your mother"
But you can't steal a willin' mind
'Cause mama's always lookin' for a lover

That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down
That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down

With dusty tear drops on his face
My daddy cried an' big steps he was takin'
    Halfway runnin' to keep up
My shorter legs were so tired and shakin'

"Where did I go wrong, girl?
Why would she leave us both this way?"
At times like these, a child of ten
Never knows exactly what to say

That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down
That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down

    We searched in every bar-room
    And honky-tonk as well
    And finally daddy found them
And Lord, you know, the rest is hard to tell

He sent me out to wait
But scared, I looked back through the door
    And daddy left them both
Soakin' up the sawdust on the floor

That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down
That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down
That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down
That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin' down

  9. Rainy Girl

    Lyrics: Rainy Girl

Maybe you wish I was someone else
I've tried so hard to be myself
But I can see you need a change
Some folks get tired of the rain
Some folks get tired of the rain

One sunny day you'll change your mind
And look for clouds, but you find
Your rainy girl won't rain no more
Some folks get tired of the rain
Some folks get tired of the rain

Hope you find those sunny days
As bright as you thought they would be
Remember who wanted what a change
It was you babe, not me

My love will last forever more
Just like the rain, my love will pour
And when you go I'll love again
Some folks don't tire of the rain
Some folks don't tire of the rain
Some folks get tired of the rain

  1. Lizzie and the Rainman

    Lyrics: Lizzie and the Rainman

He came ridin' in on the sunrise of a hot west Texas day
A fancy man in a painted wagon with some fancy things to say
Looks like you folks need some water, well water is my game
And for the small price of $100 I betcha I can make it rain

Step back non believers or the rain will never come
Somebody start that fire a-burning somebody beat the drum
You know some may think I'm crazy for making all these claims
But I swear before this day is over you folks are gonna see some rain

They all just stood there a-staring trying to believe
But there was one named Lizzie Cooper who said he was a lying cheat
You say you call yourself a rainman, well you oughta be ashamed
Starting all these people dreamin', thinking you can make it rain

Step back non believers or the rain will never come
Somebody keep that fire a-burning somebody beat the drum
You know some may think I'm crazy for making all these claims
But I swear before this day is over you folks are going see some rain

Hey Lizzie, well a mans got to have a dream
And if you can't walk on the inside with me, I'll meet you in between
Oh come with me Lizzie and the stars will right your name
And if you still think I'm lying to you
Look younder there comes the rain

Step back non believers for the rain will never come
Somebody keep that fire a-burning somebody beat the drum
You know some folks think I'm crazy for making all these claims
But I swear before this day is over you folks are going see some rain

Step back non believers for the rain will never come
Somebody keep that fire a-burning somebody beat the drum

  3. San Antonio Stroll

    Lyrics: San Antonio Stroll

When I was a child down in South Caroline
Soon as the Saturday sun went on down
My folks and sister would go
And leave me home all alone
Goin' to that big square dance in town

    Well my old radio
Would play that old Opry show
So I never got lonesome or blue
I'd fall asleep in my chair
And dream that I was right there
Just a-singin' the whole night through

When my folks would come home
    They'd be hummin' a song
Mama'd smile and say, "Child don'tcha know
There ain't a thing in this world
To make you fall in love girl
    Like the San Antonio Stroll"

    Well the day finally come
    When my momma said, "Hun
It's 'bout time you came with us as well"
Well, I had me a time
    Yes, I danced all night
'Til they rang that old crack midnight bell

Then the lights went down low
The fiddler picked up his bow
And he played something stately and slow
And my sister Eileen and her husband to be
They held hands and began to stroll

    I've been away for awhile
But it still brings a smile
When I think of the way that it goes
Now I'll sing it to you
Just so we both can do that old San Antonio Stroll

Now I'll sing it to you
Just so we all can do that old San Antonio Stroll

  6. When Will I Be Loved

Lyrics: When Will I Be Loved

    I've been cheated, been mistreated
    When will I be loved?
    I've been pushed down
    I've been pushed 'round
    When will I be loved?
When I find a new man, that I want for mine
Always breaks my heart in two
    It happens everytime
I've been lied to, I've been made blue
    When will I be loved?

When I find a new man, that I want for mine
He always breaks my heart in two
    It happens everytime
    I've been cheated, been mistreated
    When will I be loved?
    When will I be loved?
    When will I be loved?
    I've been cheated, been mistreated
    When will I be loved?

    When will I be loved?

  8. Son of a Preacher Man

Lyrics: Son of a Preacher Man

    Billy-Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered round and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
A-through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
    Lord knows to my surprise

    Chorus:
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oooh, yes he was

    Being good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I try
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come and tell me everything is all right
He'd kiss and tell me everything is all right
Can I get away again tonight?

    Chorus:
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, Lord knows he was

    (Yes he was!)

    How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
    Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
    Learnin' from each other's knowing
Lookin' to see how much we've grown

And the only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man

Yes he was, he was, oh, yes he was

The only boy who could ever reach me
was the sweet-talking son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
was the son of a preacher man

  1. Pride of Franklin County

    Lyrics: Pride of Franklin County

All through school he did real well
Got a good job in the sawmill, yeah
But he wanted more so he went away
As he stepped on board the 802
He could hear his daddy say

"Listen to the big bell a ringin' on the hillside
I hear the town choir singin', oh, so sweet and high
Lady Luck's got a heart of stone
And you're the pride of Franklin County
Don't you leave your natural home" Oh, yeah

A small town kid with the big city blues
A yearnin' heart and taped up shoes, yeah
He wanted more so he went astray
Took a gun and he stole a car and he was on his way

Listen to the big bell ringin' on the hillside
I hear the town choir singin', oh, so sweet and high, high
Lady Luck, she have a heart of stone
But the pride of Franklin County's gonna make it on his own

Well, he got tough, Lord, he was hard, yeah
He robbed a bank, oh, he didn't see the guard
The guard shot him down and as he lay there dyin'
People gathered 'round and they swore they heard him say

"Listen to the big bell ringin' on the hillside
Hear the town choir singin', oh, so sweet and high
Lady Luck's got a heart of stone
Now the pride of Franklin County's goin' home"

Listen to the big bell ringin' on the hillside
Hear the town choir singin', oh, so sweet and high
Lady Luck, she have a heart of stone
Now the pride of Franklin County's goin' home, yeah
Now the pride of Franklin County's goin' home, finally comin' home
  2. Depend on You

    Lyrics: Depend on You

Broken glass lies on the bedroom floor
A broken dream lies in my head
I was counting on a big surprise
But I got a big surprise instead

I didn't know people could change so fast
I didn't see the game you played
Now the morning finds me somewhere in the past
Hanging on the promises we made

I know that life is just a big and restless ocean
With the wind and the water always changing view
And I've always been the kind didn't count on much
But I thought I could depend on you (yeah, hmm)

Weatherman says, "It's gonna rain today"
And yes I believe he's right
My face is feeling just a little bit wet
With a big storm coming through tonight

I know that life is just a big and restless ocean
With the wind and the water always changing view
And I've always been the kind didn't count on much
But I thought I could depend on you (babe)

But I thought I could depend on you
Yes, I thought I could depend on you (honey)
  3. Ain’t That a Shame

    Lyrics: Ain’t That a Shame

    You made me cry
    When you said goodbye

    Ain't that a shame
    My tears fell like rain
    Ain't that a shame
    You're the one to blame

    You broke my heart
    When you said we'd part

    Ain't that a shame
    My tears fell like rain
    Ain't that a shame
    You're the one to blame

    Oh well, goodbye
    Although I'll cry

    Ain't that a shame
    My tears fell like rain
    Ain't that a shame
    You're the one to blame

    You made me cry
    When you said goodbye

  7. After the Thrill Is Gone

Lyrics: After the Thrill Is Gone

Same dancers in the same old shoes
Some habits that you just can't lose
It's no telling what a girl might use

    After the thrill is gone

The flame rises but it soon descends
Empty pages and a frozen pen
You're not quite lovers and you're not quite friends

    After the thrill is gone

    After the thrill is gone

What can you do when your dreams come true
And it's not quite like you planned
What have you done to be losing the one
You held them so tight in your hands

Well time passes and you must move on
Half the distance takes you twice as long
So you keep on singing for the sake of a song
    After the thrill is gone

You're afraid you might fall out of fashion
And you're feeling cold and small
Any kind of love without passion
Ain't no kind of loving at all

Same dancers in the same old shoes
You get too careful with the steps you choose
You don't care about winning but you don't want to lose

    After the thrill is gone

  8. Don’t Believe My Heart Can Stand Another You

Lyrics: Don’t Believe My Heart Can Stand Another You

Don't believe my heart can stand another you
I need someone who'll be gentle, kind and true.
So go your way I've had enough
The game you play is just to rough.
I don't believe my heart can stand another you.

Of all the people in the world to be standing at my door
Telling me she left me, you know the one I left you for
I sat down and thought it over now I've come to this conclusion
Don't believe my heart can stand another you

I've tried every way I know to put you out of myself
I've been as far down as my knees
But so far it has been no help
And with you already here what I must say get complicated
I don't believe my heart can stand another you.

Don't believe my heart can stand another you
I need someone who'll be gentle, kind and true.
So go your way I've had enough
The game you play is just to rough.
I don't believe my heart can stand another you.

  10. My Cowboy’s Getting Old

    Lyrics: My Cowboy’s Getting Old

Years ago he was the handsomest devil in town
Well, I know 'cause I've seen his pictures laying around
But he's gettin' old and can't ride them broncos no more
It makes me sad my old man just hit sixty-four

Years ago his home was the wild rodeos
But his scars are the only trophies that he's got to show
Now he's gettin' old his spurs are all rusty and brown
Oh, it makes me sad my old man is fast slowing down

He's my father, my friend and I love him
That was hard to say just a few years ago
Funny but I guess I have mellowed 'cause my cowboy's getting old
    'Cause my cowboy's getting old

Years ago I was always there by his side
He'd saddle my pony and off in the sunset we'd ride
Now he's getting old and I have gone off on my own
It makes me sad how my old man's years have flown

He's my father, my friend and I love him
That was hard to say just a few years ago
Funny but I guess I have mellowed 'cause my cowboy's getting old
'Cause my cowboy's getting old, 'cause my cowboy's getting old

  1. Here's Some Love

    Lyrics: Here's Some Love

Well, I been watching you crying
    When you do
    I just feel like dying
Well, I could give you something
That would ease your mind, yea

Let me give it to ya
    Just a little bit
    Would do ya
    It's something you been needing
    For a long, long time

    Here's some love
Take a little bit of it home with you
    Keep it close to you
And save it for a rainy day
    Hey, hey, hey

    Here's some love
Take a little bit of it home with you
    It'll grow with you
And someday you can bring it back to stay

Don't you keep me waiting now
    What's the use in hesitating?
You know as well as me
It's what you're looking for, yeah

Put your lips on mine now
We can make it feel so fine now
You never have to be without it anymore

    Here's some love
Take a little bit of it home with you
    Keep it close to you
And save it for a rainy day
    Hey, hey, hey

    Here's some love
Take a little bit of it home with you, baby
    It'll grow with you
And someday you can bring it back to stay

    Lyrics: I Use The Soap

I use the soap to wash the dirt off my face
I write with pencil so that I can erase
But what's to do when someone's taking my place
    With you, with you

I know to stop when the light turns to red
And when it rains I know to cover my head
But what's to do when I wished I was dead
Over you, over you, over you

La la la la la la la la la la la la la
    Learnin' to write off tomorrow
La la la la la la la la la la la la la
Hopin' to wash off the sorrow, oh oh

I woke to find that the world was not there
It ceased to me when I found you did not care
Then my ambition vanished into thin air along
    With you, with you

Now my emotions find it hard to let go
And as for me I'll find a new row to hoe
But maybe this time I will take it more slow
    Than before, before, than before

La la la la la la la la la la la la la
    Learnin' to write off tomorrow
La la la la la la la la la la la la la
Hopin' to wash off the sorrow, oh oh

I use the soap to wash the dirt off my face
I write with pencil so that I can erase
But what's to do when someone's taking my place

  1. Dancin' the Night Away

    Lyrics: Dancin' the Night Away

    Standin' beside the ocean
    Lookin' across the water
    Everything is beautiful here
But I still don't feel like I ought

    Things we wanted
    Not so long ago
Well, I've got 'em all now
But I ain't got you no more

But I remember the way you held me
And all the sweet things you used to say
When we were two young lovers
    Dancing the night away

    I remember everything
The way you wore your hair
The things your body told me
Will seem to float right through the air

    I look so funny dancing
But you loved me any how
I wish I could find somebody
To love me like that now

But I remember the way you held me
And all the sweet things you used to say
When we were two young lovers
    Dancing the night away

    Standin' beside the ocean
Throwing rocks out in the bay
    I should look for companionship
But it just gets in my way

    Lights are a-glittering
    All along the shore, hey
    People dancin' there
I don't dance there no more

'Cause I remember, the way you held me
And all the sweet thing you used to say
When we were two young lovers
    Dancin' the night away

    Let me see you dance
    Let me see you dance
Oh, baby, let me see you dance

    Let me see you dance
    Let me see you dance
Oh, baby, let me see you dance

  3. Wait 'Til Daddy Finds Out

Lyrics: Wait 'Til Daddy Finds Out

    Wait '
Til Daddy Finds Out Somebody's drinking his whiskey Somebody's loving
on his wife Somebody ain't gonna live till
tomorrow If daddy gets home a little early tonight
Wait 'til daddy finds out He ain't gonna like it
Wait 'til daddy finds out When he gets home tonight
Well, daddy's been a helluva father And daddy's been working seven
nights in a row And daddy let mama get a little
bit lonely Sitting home waiting for her sugar to show
Wait 'til daddy finds out Well,
he ain't gonna like it Wait 'til daddy
finds out, yeah When he gets home tonight
Well, I think I hear a car coming up the
drive I'm gonna run, find me a safe place to hide '
Cause I know what's gonna hit that fan
Oh, mama you better take a look outside
One man walked in the bedroom One man walked out of town One man's
life spared this evening And one woman shopping for a new night gown
Wait 'til daddy finds out Well he ain't gonna like
it Wait 'til daddy finds out When he gets home tonight
Now I think I hear a car coming up the drive
I'm gonna run and find me a safe place to hide '
Cause I know what's gonna hit that fan
Oh, mama you better take a look outside
Wait 'til daddy finds out No, no, no, no, no,
he ain't gonna like it Wait 'til daddy
finds out, yeah When he gets home tonight
Wait 'til daddy finds out No, no, no, no, no, no,
he ain't gonna like it Wait 'til daddy finds out,
wait 'til daddy finds out When he gets home tonight.

  6. Ridin' Rainbows

    Lyrics: Ridin' Rainbows

I never thought the time would come
When I would want to have someone
To take your place, and love me while you're gone
I promised I would stay with you
And that's just what I want to do
But a woman can't spend this much time alone

There'll always be just one more hill
You'll have to climb, I know you will
And I would never try to change your way
But just this once, lets think of me
    Now try to listen closely
There's something on my mind I've got to say

While you're out there ridin' rainbows
I get awful lonely on the ground
    So I was thinking, maybe
We could have a little baby
That I could love, when you're not around
    Not around

Sometimes my hearts an empty place
And I need love to fill that space
Those lonely nights, a smile could get me through
Each time I'd see that silly grin
The smaller image of your chin
I'd be content to hold a part of you

While you're out there ridin rainbows
I get awful lonely on the ground
    So I was thinking, maybe
We could have a little baby
That I could love, when you're not around
    Not around
  7. It's a Cowboy Lovin' Night

Lyrics: It's a Cowboy Lovin' Night

They're tuning those twin Texas fiddles
It will soon be "hold me" time
I'm in such an easy mood
It's close to four over four time
All alone at a table for two
    Just me, and the candlelight

    Shuffle with me Houston stranger
    It's a cowboy lovin' night

My last good time was in Dallas
    We danced, every song
    We promised each other forever
    Forever didn't last that long

    "Faded Love" is playing
It could be the time was right
    Shuffle with me Houston stranger
    It's a cowboy lovin' night

It's been so long since Dallas
Many lonely nights, have come and gone
It may not last but a dance or two
But it might last all night long

    "Faded Love" was playing
It could be the time is right
    Shuffle with me Houston stranger
    It's a cowboy lovin' night

    Ooh "faded Love" was playing
It could be the time is right
    Shuffle with me Houston stranger
    It's a cowboy lovin' night

  9. Knee Deep in Loving You

Lyrics: Knee Deep in Loving You

Well I'm knee deep in loving you
I done got deeper than I wanted to
It'll probably drown me before I'm through
But I done got knee deep in loving you

I thought I'd wade your waters just enough to cool me down
Wet my feet then find my way to some dryer ground
But it keep on a gettin' deeper and there's just one way to go
Too late I find I'm caught up in your undertow

Well I'm knee deep in loving you, baby
I done got deeper than I wanted to
It'll probably drown me before I'm through
But I done got knee deep in loving you

Everybody's saying you're not the stayin' kind
Ain't it like a natural fool to think you will this time
It's too late for changing this feeling down in me
I'm standing here with more than just sand upon my feet

Well I'm knee deep in loving you, baby
I done got deeper than I wanted to
It'll probably drown me before I'm through
But I done got knee deep in loving you

Well I'm knee deep in loving you, baby
I done got deeper than I wanted to
It'll probably drown me before I'm through
But I done got knee deep in loving you

Well I'm knee deep in loving you

But I done got knee deep in loving you

Baby I'm yours (baby I'm yours)

In other words until the end of time

Nothing in this world could ever drive me away
    Everyday you'll hear me say
Baby I'm yours (baby I'm yours)

Till the poets run out of rhymes
Baby I'm yours (baby I'm yours)
    Baby I'm yours
  5. I Don't Want You to Go
  6. Heartache and a Half
  7. Changes

    Lyrics: Changes

Neither one of us will ever change
We're both the same and that's a shame
'Cause when we were together it was right
We had it all, you and I

You're not changin' me, and I'm not changin' you
The only change is what we're goin' through
You took the part of me that I was proudest of
Now you're sayin' that's the part that you can't love

Changes, I'm gonna have to make some changes
Now that I know what your game is
I know that I would only lose, no matter what I do
And the first change that I'll make is gonna be you

If lovin' what you had ain't what you want
What do you need? You don't need me
You said I was the answer to your prayers
It don't seem fair, we both still care

Changes, I'm gonna have to make some changes
Now that I know what your game is
I know that I would only lose, no matter what I do
So the first change that I'll make is gonna be you

    Oh, changes
I'm gonna have to make some changes
Now that I know what your game is
I know that I would only lose, oh
Can't you see we're through? (Changes)
Oh, somehow I'll get over you (changes)

    Somehow, oh, changes
Hard for a young girl to cope (changes)
  8. Feel Right

    Lyrics: Feel Right

You know I want you baby
I can't help but feel this way
Got my eyes on you darlin'
    I can't wait another day

I wanna wrap my arms around you
And squeeze you through the night
And love you 'til the morning
    I wanna make you
    I feel right

Well now take my hand and show me
The things you do so well
    We might last forever
    Only time will tell

I wanna kiss you all over
It's gonna feel, oh so nice
I know it's hard on you baby
    I wanna make you
    Feel right
    Come on baby

I wanna kiss you all over
It's gonna feel, oh so nice
You know it's hard on me baby
    Come on and make me
    Feel right

Well now, take my hand and show me
The things you do so well
    We might last forever
    Only time will tell

I wanna kiss you all over
It's gonna feel, oh so nice
You know it's hard on me baby
    Come on and make me
    Feel right

    Come on and make me
    I feel right (feel right)
    I feel right (feel right)
    I feel right (feel right)
    I feel right (feel right)
    I feel right (feel right)
Come on and make (feel right) me feel right
    (feel right)
Come on and make (feel right) me feel right
  9. A Thing Called Love
  10. Too Long

Girls Like Me (1986)

  1. One Love at a Time

Lyrics: One Love at a Time

    It makes me weak
    And in a hurry
    All night long I lay
    And I worry
I'm so afraid I'm gonna talk in my sleep
    Who do I love
    Who am I using
Which one is which can get so confusing
I've got to chose one and set the other one free

One love at a time thats all I can handle
Burning both ends of the candle can drive you insane
With one love in your heart
And one love on your mind
It can tear a girl apart
I just need one love at a time

    One's got a birthday
    It's in December
    Which ones in July
    I can't remember
    I get 'em mixed up
    What am I gonna do
    It keeps me uptight
    Driving me crazy
    They're both believing
    They're both my baby
    Sometimes I wonder
    Who's been playing with who

One love at a time that's all I can handle
Burning both ends of the candle can drive you insane
With one love in your heart
And one love on your mind
It can tear a girl apart
I just need one love at a time
Yes it can tear this girl apart
I just need one love at a time
  2. I'll Come Back as Another Woman

Lyrics: I'll Come Back as Another Woman

You never gave me back the love I gave to you
You just gave me half your heart and that half was untrue
So I'll leave you with a promise from a heart that's heard enough
Someday you'll find out that you can't escape my love

I'll come back as another woman
One with all the secrets to your heart
I'll come back as another woman
And I'll be the one you burn for
That you reach for in the dark
I'll be the one who breaks your devil heart

Some day you'll wake up with your arms around a dream
Love that she will make to you will be too good to believe
You'll say, "I love you," and for once it will be true
You'll fall too fast to realize who you're talking to

You'll give your heart and soul, she'll be the only one
You'll be hers completely, there'll be no way you can run
Then with a smile she'll break your loving heart in two
And baby, you'll recall the one who said these words to you

I'll come back as another woman
One with all the secrets to your heart
I'll come back as another woman (another woman)
And I'll be the one you burn for
That you reach for in the dark
I'll be the one who breaks your devil heart

You'll hear the echo of my promise (ha, ha, ha)
How you laughed and how I cried
The one you finally give your heart to (ha, ha, ha)
Will leave you crying in the night

I'll come back as another woman
One with all the secrets to your heart
I'll come back as another woman
I'll be the one you burn for
That you reach for in the dark
I'll be the one who breaks your devil heart

    I'll come back
    I'll come back
    As another woman (another woman)
You got a devil heat (I'll come back, another woman)
I'll come back as another woman, woman, wowan (I'll come back, another woman)
  3. Fool, Fool Heart
  4. Just Another Love

    Lyrics: Just Another Love

    Another love, just another love,
I don't wanna be just another love,
On your list of hearts, you've torn apart,
    Then you've cast them aside.
Oh, can't you see, I don't wanna be,
I don't wanna be just another love in your life.

Well, I hear you've got a reputation in town,
For takin' all the young girls an' breakin' them down.
You're givin' me an invitation to stay,
But boy, you know, my heart says I oughtta be runnin' away.
Well, I've never been hurt, so I guess it's my turn,
I'm gonna see how strong I am.

    Another love, just another love,
I don't wanna be just another love,
On your list of hearts, you've torn apart,
    Then you've cast them aside.
Oh, can't you see, I don't wanna be,
I don't wanna be just another love in your life.

Well you've got some kind of magic in your big brown eyes,
Where'd you ever learn how to hypnotise?
Just like in romance books that I've read.
Drinkin' lemonade in the shade of my canopy bed.
Well, I've never been hurt, so I'll see what it's worth,
I'm gonna see how strong I am.

    Another love, just another love,
I don't wanna be just another love,
On your list of hearts, you've torn apart,
    Then you've cast them aside.
Oh, can't you see, I don't wanna be,
I don't wanna be just another love in your life.

Well, I've never been hurt, so I'll see what it's worth,
I'm gonna give your love a try.

    Another love, just another love,
I don't wanna be just another love,
On your list of hearts, you've torn apart,
    Then you've cast them aside.
Oh, can't you see, I don't wanna be,
Oh no, I don't wanna be,
I don't wanna be just another love in your life.
  5. Girls Like Me

    Lyrics: Girls Like Me

    Some girls have someone
    They can rely on
They got a mailbox made for two

And I feel the same need
To have someone to lean on
But that's something I just never learned to do

    Girls like me
    We believe in
Action found on some secluded beach
    It's hard to please
    A paperback dreamer
Always holding on to something out of reach
Love may never come that easily
    To girls like me

Once I had a new love
    I gave my heart to
Oh, but I couldn't make that feeling stay
And all the love he showed me
Well, it just couldn't hold me
    Once the magic slipped away

    And girls like me
    Still believe in
Love embracing on some lonely street
    It's hard to be
    A paperback dreamer
Always holding on to something out of reach
Maybe love was never meant to be
    For girls like me

But surely there is someone out there waiting
    Some romantic dreamer
    Who still believes
    In girls like me
  6. Somebody to Care

    Lyrics: Somebody to Care

With a 38 tucked out of sight
In a hopped up Ford on a Friday night
He was burnin' rubber, halfway to Waco
    Destination- liquor store
And though he'd never robbed one before
He made up his mind to do it
    Then he'd lay low.
Cause all he thought he needed was a little bit of cash to roll on
A good set of wheels and some gas to get him there
But all he really needed was something real to hold on to
All he really needed was somebody to care.
The edge of town was just in sight,
There she stood in his lights
With a sign in her hand that just read "San Antone"
He hit his brakes and he stopped that car
Said I hadn't planned to go that far
But I'll give you a lift to the far side of Waco.
She said, all I really need is a little bit of cash to roll on
A good timin' man with a little bit of time to spare
But what she really needed was something real to hold on to
All she really needed was somebody to care
(Somebody to care) they drove all night
(Somebody to care) yeah the miles rolled by
They talked and joked and laughed and cried
(Somebody to care) the sun was on the rise
(Somebody to care) when love shined in their lives
All they really needed was somebody to care
    The liquor store went undisturbed
    And nobody heard another word
From the kid with the hopped up Ford over by Waco
    Rumor has it second hand
    He's a happily married man
Runnin' his own garage down in San Antone
But all he thought he needed was a little bit of cash to role on
A good set of wheels and the gas to get him there
But what he really needed was something real to hold on to
All he really needed was somebody to care
  7. It's Only Over for You

Lyrics: It's Only Over for You

Somehow I knew I'd see you tonight
    Here in our old rendezvous
I'm at the mercy of old memories
    You've got your somebody new

You may wonder why I keep coming by
With this heart so broken in two
Any fool can see with one look at me
That it's only over for you

    It's only over for you
No, I'm not the one you found somebody new
You can go on believing we're through
Ooh, but it's only over, it's only over for you

As I watch you falling in love
You can't see me falling apart
And even though you hurt me I know
I still love you with all of my heart

But I won't hide my face in a stranger's embrace
When we dance into each other's view
No, don't be surprised at these tears in my eyes
'Cause it's only over for you

    It's only over for you
No, I'm not the one you found somebody new
You can go on believing we're through
Ooh, but it's only over, it's only over for you
Oh, it's only over, it's only over for you
  8. Daddy Long Legs

    Lyrics: Daddy Long Legs

He's the kind of man don't have to talk
He gets what he wants by the way he walks
Long legs movin' in a pair of Levi's
Lookin' so good that it hurts my eyes
Hey, Daddy Long Legs walk this way
I could stand a little bit of excitement today
You got what it takes to make a girl weak
If I hit on you would you turn your cheek?

    (Ooh) Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Daddy Long, Daddy Long Legs
    Mhm-hm, oh

    Lookin' so good

Listen to me, girls, I'll tell it to you straight
Don't go messin' with a man with the heart of a snake
Daddy Long Legs he's a well known fact
He gets what he wants and he don't give it back
He'll light your fire 'til your body burns down
Kick away your ashes while he's walkin' outta town
So if you wanna take a chance on a one night stand
Daddy Long Legs is a devil of a man

    (Ooh) Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    (Daddy Long Legs)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)

    Too much to touch (ooh)
Oh, (Daddy Long) Daddy Long Legs (hey)
    Daddy, Daddy, Daddy (ooh)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Daddy Long Legs (ooh)
    Too much to touch, hey
  9. You Could Change My Mind
  10. Still Hold On

    Lyrics: Still Hold On

If I told you tonight that I loved you
    Would you walk my way
    Would you say
    Lies I wanted to hear

If I told you tonight that I need you
    Would you break my heart
    Would you start
    Tearin' me down again

I feel so lonely when I'm with you
But I'm so lonely when you're gone
I can't live with you, I can't live without you
But I still hold on, I still hold on

If I told you tonight I was leavin'
    Would you call my name
    Take the blame
    Turn it all around again

'Cause you know I love you
    And it's worth the heartache
We curse the heartbreak we make
    But I still hold on

I feel so lonely when I'm with you
But I'm so lonely when you're gone
I can't live with you, I can't live without you
But I still hold on, I still hold on, oh yeah

Hey, I feel so lonely when I'm with you
But I'm so lonely when you're gone
I can't live with you, I can't live without you
But I still hold on, I still hold on

If I told you tonight that I loved you
    Would you walk my way
    Would you say
    Lies I wanted to hear

If I told you tonight that I need you
    Would you break my heart
    Would you start
    Tearin' me down again

I feel so lonely when I'm with you
But I'm so lonely when you're gone
I can't live with you, I can't live without you
But I still hold on, I still hold on

I still hold on, I still hold on
Still hold on, still hold on

Strong Enough to Bend (1988)

  1. You're Not Alone

    Lyrics: You're Not Alone

Do you ever miss what we had when we had it all?
Do you sometimes sit by the phone and wish we could talk?
If your pride won't let you say yes, well, it might help you to know
If you ever get lonely, you're not alone, you're not alone

I too have been blue since you've been gone
So don't be afraid to come back home
'Cause if you ever get lonely
    You're not alone, oh

If you ever wish you could change the things that we said
And you can't stop thinking of us when you're lying in bed
Well, let me tell you, I understand, how it hurts to be on your own
So if you ever get lonely, you're not alone, you're not alone

Well, I too have been blue since you've been gone
So don't be afraid to come back home
'Cause if you ever get lonely, you're not alone
    No! You're not alone

Well, I too have been blue since you been gone
So don't be afraid to come back home
'Cause if you ever get lonely, you're not alone
(You're not alone) you're not alone
    No! You're not alone
  2. Strong Enough to Bend

    Lyrics: Strong Enough to Bend

There's a tree out in the back yard
That never has been broken by the wind
And the reason it's still standing
It was strong enough to bend

For years we have stayed together
    As lovers and as friends
What we have will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you say somethin' that you can't take back
A big wind blows and you hear a little crack
When you say "Hey, well, I might be wrong"
You can sway with the wind 'til the storm is gone
(Sway with the wind 'til the storm is gone)

Like a tree (like a tree)
    Out in the back yard
That never has been broken by the wind
    Our love (our love)
    Will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend, yeah, hey

When you start thinkin' that you know it all
A big wind blows and a branch will fall
When you say "Hey, this job takes two"
We can sway with the wind 'til the skies turn blue
(Sway with the wind 'til the skies turn blue)

Like the tree (like the tree)
    Out in the back yard
That never has been broken by the wind
    Our love (our love)
    Will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

    Our love (our love)
    Will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend
  3. As Long as I'm Dreamin'

Lyrics: As Long as I'm Dreamin'

I haven't even let myself remember
I've locked you from my thoughts since you've been gone
But tonight I'm givin' in to that old feeling
I've been afraid of feeling for so long

As long as I'm dreamin', I might as well dream it all
Let my imagination fly beyond these lonely walls
As long as I'm dreamin', my dream will always be
To find a way to love you back to me

As I close my eyes, we're back together
Makin' love the way we used to do
You softly whisper, "I won't ever leave you"
And you seem so real, I believe it's true

As long as I'm dreamin', I might as well dream it all
Let my imagination fly beyond these lonely walls
As long as I'm dreamin', my dream will always be
To find a way to love you back to me

As long as I can dream it, it's not over
There will always be a chance for you and me

As long as I'm dreamin,' I might as well dream it all
Let my imagination fly beyond these lonely walls
As long as I'm dreamin', my dream will always be
To find a way to love you back to me

    As long as I'm dreamin'
  4. Lonesome Town

    Lyrics: Lonesome Town

I've been stuck here in lonesome Texas
Nothin' to my name but a locket chain and a cotton dress
But I'm leavin' on a train to Nashville
And the lonesome desperado who left me in this mess

Oh, the west is getting way too wild
    For this Appalachian Mountain child

    No more rodeo riders
They just saddle up and ride out of town
His heart is just like the desert
Not a drop of love to be found in lonesome town

There ain't no place for a wildwood flower
In the state where the yellow rose is the object of desire
So I sit here and count the hours
'Til I get to the place that takes my soul just a little bit higher

That cowboy got the best of me
This girl is headed back to Tennessee

Oh oh, no more rodeo riders
They just saddle up and ride out of town
His heart is just like the desert
Not a drop of love to be found in lonesome town

Oh oh, no more rodeo riders
They just saddle up and ride out of town
His heart is just like the desert
Not a drop of love to be found in lonesome town

    No more rodeo riders
They just saddle up and ride out of town
His heart is just like the desert
Not a drop of love to be found in lonesome town

    Ooh, such a lonesome town
    No more rodeo riders
    No more rodeo riders
    It's a lonesome town
    No more rodeo riders riders
His heart is just like the desert
    It's a lonesome town, oh
  5. Daddy and Home

    Lyrics: Daddy and Home

I am dreaming, tonight, of an old southern town,
And the best friend that I ever had.
For I've grown so weary of roaming around,
And I'm going home to my Dad.

Your hair has turned to silver,
And I know you're failing too.
    Daddy, dear, oh, Daddy,
    I'm coming back to you.
    You made my childhood happy,
But still I longed to roam.
I've had my way, but now I'll say,
I long for you and for home.

    Dear Daddy, you shared all my sorrows and joys;
You tried hard to bring me up right.
I know you'll still be one of the boys.
    I'm starting back home tonight.

Your hair has turned to silver,
And I know you're failing too.
    Daddy, dear, oh, Daddy,
    I'm coming back to you.
    You made my childhood happy,
But still I longed to roam.
I've had my way, but now I'll say,
I long for you and for home.

I've had my way, but now I'll say,
I long for you and for home.
  6. Highway Robbery

    Lyrics: Highway Robbery

Okay officer, I admit it, I was speedin'
But before you write me up, let me tell you the reason

I wasn't tryin' to outrun you
I was chasin' a guy who, out of the blue
He committed a crime back about a mile or two, oh yeah
I was cruisin' along when he pulled up out of nowhere
He was hotter than the truck he drove
When just one lane over, he aimed those angel eyes at me
He smiled like we were meant to be
For he stole my heart from a movin' car

    It was highway robbery
He grabbed my heart and took off on the run
    It was highway robbery
He oughta do time in my arms for what he's done

So hey Officer, how 'bout you understandin'
Won't you turn your blue light on and help me catch that bandit
He's got somethin' that belongs to T
    I can't let him get away scot-free
For it's only right, but he's mine tonight

    And it was highway robbery
He grabbed my heart and took off on the run
    It was highway robbery
He oughta do time in my arms for what he's done

    It was highway robbery
Well, he grabbed my heart and took off on the run
    It was highway robbery
He oughta do time in my arms for what he's done
He oughta do time in my arms for what he's done, oh yeah

Hey officer, let's talk about this now
By the time you let me go, that boy'll be all the way in Texas
    Sure he's good lookin'
By the way, what color are your eyes?
  7. Lonely at the Right Time

Lyrics: Lonely at the Right Time

I can't believe you took the time to call
You say you think you love me after all
You didn't know what you were doing then
So now you wanna do it all again

You know a perfect way to end the fight
I gotta tell you it's your lucky night

You caught me lonely at the right time
You better hurry 'fore I change my mind
Tonight it isn't gonna be the same
We'll have the pleasure and forget the pain
I feel the need to feel you holdin' me
Tomorrow you can be a memory
    You caught me lonely
    Lonely at the right time

No, I'm not sayin' you can have a key
I want your lovin' and my liberty
You say you dream about me all night long
That different tune is still the same old song

I know your lyin' but that's nothin' new
Don't get to thinking I've forgiven you

You caught me lonely at the right time
You better hurry 'fore I change my mind
Tonight it isn't gonna be the same
We'll have the pleasure and forget the pain
I feel the need to feel you holdin' me
Tomorrow you can be a memory
    You caught me lonely
    Lonely at the right time

Well, if it breaks your heart, I'm not too concerned
The bed's the same but the table has turned

You caught me lonely at the right time
You better hurry 'fore I change my mind
Tonight it isn't gonna be the same
We'll have the pleasure and forget the pain
I feel the need to feel you holdin' me
Tomorrow you can be a memory
    You caught me lonely
Lonely at the right time, oh yeah

    You caught me lonely
Lonely at the right time, hmm
    You caught me lonely
    Lonely at the right time
  8. Playing for Keeps

    Lyrics: Playing for Keeps

    Here in the night
With my heart on the line
I bet my whole life, this time
Well, it may be a chance
    But I've fallen so deep
This time I'm playing for keeps

I have loved and lost before
But this time I feel so sure
If there's a love that will endure
    This will be the one
Everything my heart hopes to win, is right here in my reach
This time I'm playing for keeps

But I have loved and lost before
But this time I feel so sure
If there's a love that will endure
    This will be the one
Everything my heart hopes to win
Well, it's right here in my reach
This time I'm playing for keeps

Honey, this time we're playing for keeps
  9. Call on Me

    Lyrics: Call on Me

If your world comes crashing down
If you need comfort but it can't be found
If you're lonely, you can always call on me

If nobody is listening to you
I'll be the walls you tell your secrets to
If you want me, night or day, just call on me

I'm not asking for rings of gold
Just one ring on my telephone
I'm just wanting a chance to prove
    That my love is true
    If it connects with you
Call on me (call on me, call on me)

There's no one that I call mine
I'm only held by the hands of time
And it's a long wait, hoping you will call on me

There's nothin' silent as a phone that won't ring
Nothin' louder than your voice in my dreams
It's a heartache knowing you don't call on me

I'm not asking for rings of gold
Just one ring on my telephone
I'm just wanting a chance to prove
    That my love is true
    If it connects with you
Call on me (call on me)
    Yeah (call on me) yeah

If you ever wanna get me on the line
You got my number, it's this heart of mine
I'm not asking for a ring of gold
Just a love that won't turn cold
Call on me (call on me, call on me)
Call on me (call on me) yeah
Call on me (call on me)
    Mmm, call me
  10. Back on My Feet

    Lyrics: Back on My Feet

I should've said, "No, no, no"
    I should've taken it slow
He had me falling too fast for his pretty boy charms
But girls would close their eyes, pretend and fantasize
That it's alright to lay there in his arms
I didn't know at the time he would take me on down the line
And leave my heart on the roadside broken down

    Nowhere to run or hide
I just gathered up my pride
When there's nowhere to turn, you gotta turn it around

Now I'm back on my feet, back on the road to love
Yeah, I'm back on my feet
    Taking advantage of
    Learning a lesson or two
Hurting all over and totally blue
I'm putting the word on the street that I'm back on my feet

I'm gonna be fine, fine, fine
Now that I'm back in my mind
Gonna chalk this one up as an honest mistake
    Only the night to blame
    It's all in the game
Even if it happens too soon it's never too late

Now I'm back on my feet, back on the road to love
Yeah, I'm back on my feet
    Taking advantage of
    Learning a lesson or two
Hurting all over and totally blue
I'm putting the word on the street that I'm back on my feet

I'm back on my feet, back on the road to love
Yeah, I'm back on my feet
    Taking advantage of
    Learning a lesson or two
Hurting all over and totally blue
I'm putting the word on the street that I'm back on my feet

Now, I'm back on my feet
I'm back on the road to love

Can't Run from Yourself (1992)

  1. It’s a Little Too Late

Lyrics: It’s a Little Too Late

    (Pat Terry/Roger Murrah)
Well I was up all night well wonderin' what to do
Thinkin' that I oughta just forget about you
But it's a little too late
Well it's a little too late
When you walked in I shoulda walked out
Well it's a little too late to do the right thing now
Well the whole town told me you're a heart break king
Guess I oughta pay attention when they say those things
But it's a little too late
Well it's a little too late
I know all my old buddies wanna help me out
But it's a little too late to do the right thing now
Turn the jukebox up throw some sawdust down
I'm too far gone to turn this heart around
I may be wrong but I don't want out
Well it's a little too late to do the right thing now
Turn the jukebox up throw some sawdust down
I'm too far gone to turn this heart around
I may be wrong but I don't want out
Well it's a little too late to do the right thing now
I was up all night well wonderin' what to do
Thinkin' that I oughta just forget about you
But it's a little too late
Well it's a little too late
When you walked in I shoulda walked out
Well it's a little too late to do the right thing now
I may be wrong but I don't want out
Well it's a little too late to do the right thing now
  2. Can’t Run From Yourself

    Lyrics: Can’t Run From Yourself

    You can run for cover
    You can run for help
You can run to your lover
    But you
    Can't ever run from yourself
    No no no
    Because there you are
No matter how far you go
    You can run to Alaska
    Run to L.A
    Run home to mama
    But you
    Can't ever run from yourself

    No no no
    Because there you are
No matter how far you go

No matter how far you go
No matter how long you stay
    You can run forever
    But darling you will never
Never find true happiness that way
    You can run for election
You can run for your life
    Run for protection
    But you
    Can't ever run from yourself
    No no no
    Because there you are
No matter how far you go
    Oh no

No matter how far you go
No matter how long you stay
    You can run forever
    But darling you will never
Never find true happiness that way

    You can run for cover
    You can run for help
You can run to your lover
    But you
    Can't ever run from yourself
    No no no
    Because there you are
No matter how far you go
    There you are
No matter how far you go
  3. Two Sparrows in a Hurricane

Lyrics: Two Sparrows in a Hurricane

    She's 15, and he's barely driving a car
She's got his ring, and he's got the keys to her heart
It's just a matter of time
They'll spread their wings and fly

Like two sparrows in a hurricane
    Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
And fate that can move anything

    They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it
    But love says they will

There's a baby crying, and one more on the way
There's a wolf at the door with a big stack of bills they can't pay
The clouds are dark and the wind is high
But they can see the other side

Like two sparrows in a hurricane
    Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
And fate that can move anything

    They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it
    But love says they will

    She's 83 and he's barely driving a car
She's got his ring and he's got the key to her heart
It's just a matter of time
They'll spread their wings and fly

Like two sparrows in a hurricane
    Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
And fate that can move anything

    They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it
    But love says they will
  4. Don’t Let My Heart Be the Last to Know

Lyrics: Don’t Let My Heart Be the Last to Know

I see the future slipping by
I see it fading from my life
I see a distant look growing in your eyes
    Are you telling me goodbye
And are you coming back again
Is it over now, is this the end
There's a feeling of lonesome in the wind
    Tell me is it so
Don't let my heart be the last to know

I have a right to know the truth
After all that we've been through
Is there somebody else, have you found someone new
Is there just no more me and you

And are you coming back again
Is it over now, is this the end
There's a feeling of lonesome in the wind
    Tell me is it so
Don't let my heart be the last to know

There's a feeling of lonesome in the wind
    Tell me is it so
Don't let my heart be the last to know
  5. Tell Me About It

    Lyrics: Tell Me About It

They say that there's a hole in the atmosphere
The things you think will last us disappear
When you were ready to say " I do"
Somebody lowered a boom on you
And now you need a sympathetic ear, so baby

    Tell me about it
Tell me about tear drops in the dark
    Tell me about it
Tell me all about your broken heart
You say you need someone to hold you tight
You can't stand another lonely night
Well, come closer and tell me about it

Love isn't always true, it hurts sometimes
Your tears will tell on you girl I'm not blind
I know what you're goin' through
I graduated from that school too
If you need a shoulder cry on mine

    Tell me about it
Tell me about teardrops in the dark
    Tell me about it
Tell me all about your broken heart
You say you need someone to hold you tight
You can't stand another lonely night
Well, come closer and tell me about it

Took a lesson playin' a fool
I graduated from that school too
If you need a shoulder cry on mine

    Tell me about it
Tell me about teardrops in the dark
    Tell me about it
Tell me all about your broken heart
You say you need someone to hold you tight
You can't stand another lonely night
Well, come closer and tell me about it

    Tell me about it
Tell me about tear drops in the dark(yeah)
    Tell me about it
Tell me all about your broken heart
    Tell me about it
Tell me about tear drops in the dark
  6. I’ve Learned to Live

    Lyrics: I’ve Learned to Live

Like a child lost in the wilderness
I knew not where to go
    Surrounded by the emptiness
Of a love that left me cold
    I stumbled through that darkness
Of nights that have no stars
And days that have no sunshine
    To warm my broken heart

Like a bird in flight brought down by stones
    From an unknown assailant's sling
A stranger took you from my arms
    And I lost everything
In days to come I nearly ran
Out of ways to stay alive
But through it all I never lost
    The will to survive

And I'm not over you and I doubt that I'll ever be
But I've learned to live and you won't be the death of me, oh, no
Yes, I've learned to live and I'm doing well
    But I'm not over you

Like a thief who takes just what he needs
    And leaves the rest behind
You took the heart right out of me
And left me with my mind
And I almost went out of it
    At times believed I did
But gradually I learned you're someone
    I'll have to live with

'Cause I'm not over you and I doubt that I'll ever be
But I've learned to live and you won't be the death of me, oh no
Yes, I've learned to live and I'm doing well
    But I'm not over you
  7. What Do They Know

    Lyrics: What Do They Know

They say that life goes on
    I'll find true love again.
It's not the end of the world,
One day my heart will mend.
Someone will come along and a new love will grow
Thats what they say but what do they know
How could they know the pain I feel inside my heart,
    They never lost your love,
So who do they think they are.
They never held you, or had to let you go.
Well They're not trying to live without you,
    So what do they know

They say all is fair in love
But for me that's just not true.
I feel like someone took a knife
And cut my life in two.
It's better to have love and lost
Than to have never loved, I'm told.
At least that's what they say, but what do they know
Well they're not trying to live without you,
    So what do they know
  8. Rainbow Rider

    Lyrics: Rainbow Rider

Out of the shoot he sits tall as the timber
One hand on the horse and one hand on the sky
Eight seconds later he lands in the money
And winning's a feeling that money can't buy
The kids love a hero and big silver buckles
The girls love the dream of a rodeo man
He loves the backroads and fields without fences
And I guess he loves me because I understand
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
He's hitched up his saddle he's ready to ride
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
A dream chasing cowboy with a rodeo girl by his side
Winter in Tucson and spring in Savanna
Reno in June then off to Cheyenne
He remembers the fall that he took last September
He's hopin' he draws that ol' burr again
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
He's hitched up his saddle he's ready to ride
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
A dream chasing cowboy with a rode girl by his side
Lately he's talking about having a son
Someone who'll learn from the things that he's done
    A young bronc bustin' a-buckaroo
A trailer behind an old white Eldorado
A red western sunset and a blue mountain range
Some things in this life he'd like to do over
But livin' with him is something I'd never change
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
He's hitched up his saddle he's ready to ride
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
A dream chasing cowboy with a rodeo girl by his side
    He's a rain-rain-rainbow rider
A dream chasing cowboy with a rodeo girl by his side
  9. Half the Moon

    Lyrics: Half the Moon

Half the moon is shining tonight
And half the moon is pitch black
And I got half the chance that you might
    Turn around and come back

Half my love has seen the light
And half my love is still blind
    It keeps on thinking tomorrow
    You'll change your mind

Half our hearts were doing just fine
And half our hearts were in doubt
And half the time while walking the line
    I ended up steppin' out

And half my prayers were praying to God
And half my prayers were to you
Tonight it looks like the answers are overdue

And I'm feeling just how hard
    Half the moon can fool
I swear my heart might crack in two
    If that moon were full

Half the moon is shining tonight
And half the moon's up and gone
You must have taken half of it's life
To find the road that you're on

And half my love has seen the truth
And half my love is still blind
It makes that missin' half the moon
    Hard to find, oh

It makes that missin' half the moon
    Hard to find
  10. Danger Ahead

    Lyrics: Danger Ahead

I warned you baby, a long time ago
You got to stop all this, hurtin' me so
But I don't think you heard a word I said

Well, I'm telling you now, honey
    That there's danger ahead

Treating me bad, telling me lies
That ain't cool baby, that ain't wise
You've been running around, spending all of my bread

You better change your ways now
    'Cause there's danger ahead

Hell hath no fury, like a woman scorned
They should've told you that on the day you was born
Better watch your step now, be careful where you thread

I'm telling you this, baby, that there's danger ahead

Can't understand why you want to do me wrong
Straighten up baby, or you'll find me gone

I wanna love you, that's sure enough
But if you're looking for trouble, well, I can get tough
I'm gonna quit all my cryin', dry all the tears that I shed

Yea, I'm warning you, baby, that there's danger ahead
Well, I'm warning you, baby, that there's danger ahead
Oh, I'm warning you, baby, that there's danger ahead

While I'm Livin' (2019)

  1. Mustang Ridge

    Lyrics: Mustang Ridge

I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge
If I ever make it out alive
If you don't see me by the rising sun
You know I had to take the dive
When the hounds are running down Oso Creek
    Like Arabs on the track
I'll be halfway across the southern horn
    Too late for turning back

And if I die tonight on the Hays Street Bridge
I ain't never going back to Mustang Ridge

I got my knee on the wheel and I'm feeling free
With my hobnail on the gas
I just crossed over the county line
Tryna make it up to Wild Rose Pass
Now the radio's saying all hell broke loose
This morning at the Lockhart Jail
Now I'm flying like an angel on Dead Man's Run
I got the devil riding on my tail
    Yeah, I do

I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge
If I ever make it out alive
If you don't see me by the rising sun
You know I had to take the dive
When the hounds are running down Oso Creek
    Like Arabs on the track
I'll be halfway across the southern horn
    Too late for turning back

And if I die tonight on the Hays Street Bridge
I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge

And did you hear they found an old burned-out car
    Up in the Davis Hills?
Sheriff said on the evenin' news
"Nobody found but they're looking still"

    Now a woman's life ain't just a list
Of the worst things she has done
I'll leave you now with the heart of stone
Sometimes a past is hard to outrun

I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge
If I ever make it out alive
If you don't see me by the rising sun
You know I had to take the dive
When the hounds are running down Oso Creek
    Like Arabs on the track
I'll be halfway across the southern horn
    Too late for turning back

If I die tonight on the Hays Street Bridge
I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge
And if I die tonight on the Hays Street Bridge (oh Lord)
I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge
I'm never going back to Mustang Ridge
I ain't never going back to Mustang Ridge
    (Hell no)
  2. The Wheels of Laredo

    Lyrics: The Wheels of Laredo

On a winter night in Webb County, Texas
On the North Bank of the mighty Rio Grande
I was watching the jungle fires a-burnin'
Across the border of a not-so-distant land
And the echoes of the church bells that were swingin'
Could be heard from Guadalupe Market Square
There was a girl down there in the south side of the river
She had feathers tied into her long black hair

And if I was I was White-Crowned Sparrow
Well I would float upon the southern skies of blue
But I'm stuck inside the wheels of Laredo
Wishing I was rolling back to you

I put on my favorite jacket for Jamboozie
I painted up my eyes and wore my beads
There was a band playing "To God Be the Glory"
There were people dancing all around the street
There were barrels on the sidewalk that were burning
    And a fortune-teller readin' people's hands
And I swear, I heard those church bells ringing
'Cross the border of a not-so-distant land

Singing, if I was White-Crowned Sparrow
Well I would float upon the southern skies of blue
But I'm stuck inside the wheels of Laredo
Wishing I was rolling back to you
    If I was White-Crowned Sparrow
Well I would float upon the southern skies of blue
But I'm stuck inside the wheels of Laredo
Wishing I was rolling back to you

I'm stuck inside the wheels of Laredo
Wishing I was rolling back to you
Wish I was rolling back, back to you
Wish I was rolling back to you
Wish I was rolling back to you
  3. I Don’t Owe You Anything

Lyrics: I Don’t Owe You Anything

    One, two, three, four
Aw, I got somethin' to say

Well, it's a long walk down the hallway
But it's a short drive to the bank
Ain't it a bitch learnin' the hard way?
It might be easier than you think
Now, you can keep my tears and my good years
And your Sears and Roebuck ring
And I'll take this show on down the road
    I don't owe you anything

Well, I made your bed and I made your lunch
And for the last time, your clothes are out to dry
I know you like my own reflection
I see her in your eyes
Darling, I ain't growin' old with you
I don't need your front porch swing
I raised up all your babies
    I don't owe you anything

Now despite your sin, you're gonna start again
    A retired family man
With a younger wife than our own son
And a cat that you can't stand
You're gonna call me up in Vegas
'Cause you're lookin' for a fight
And I'll be over you with better things to do
On a perfectly good Saturday night

Well, I made your bed and I made your lunch
And for the last time, your clothes are out to dry
I know you like my own reflection
I see her in your eyes
Darling, I ain't growin' old with you
I don't need your front porch swing
Well, I raised up all your babies
    I don't owe you anything

Hey, I made your bed and I made your lunch
And for the last time, your clothes are out to dry
I know you like my own reflection
I see her in your eyes
Darling, I ain't growin' old with you
I don't need your front porch swing
Well, I raised up all your babies
    I don't owe you anything

Hell, I raised up all your babies
And I don't owe you a god dang thing
    Hell no
  4. The Day My Heart Goes Still

Lyrics: The Day My Heart Goes Still

    Yes, I know
    Well, I know I will, I will
Love you 'til the day my heart goes still
Until they put me in the ground up on some hill
I don't think I'll ever get my fill
I'm gonna love you 'til the day my heart goes still

    When I was younger
Lord knows I tried, I tried
I wish that I had somebody by my side
There were times I thought I'd get lost in the fold
But you lived your life so fearlessly and bold
I'm gonna love you 'til the day my blood runs cold

    Yes, I know
    Well, I know I will, I will
Love you 'til the day my heart goes still
Until they put me in the ground up on some hill
I don't think I'll ever get my fill
I'm gonna love you 'til the day my heart goes still

Now I ain't no young girl
But this I know, I know
I still got a long, long way to go
But if the good Lord should come knockin' at my door
I had everything I wanted and more
And if there's hell to pay when we settle up the score
And I can always say I lived my life my way
No tomorrow for mistakes I made today

I don't think I'll ever get my fill
I don't think I'll ever get my fill
I don't think I'm ever gonna get my fill
I'm gonna love you 'til the day my heart goes still
  5. High Ridin’ Heroes

    Lyrics: High Ridin’ Heroes

    Daylight or midnight
Red eyes and that old hat
    Whiskey-bent and busted flat
She's a credit to her flaws
She's a bad risk, but a good friend
A small change and loose ends
She only regrets that she might've been
A little faster on the draw

    Those old high ridin' heroes
    They're anywhere the wind blows
She's been to hell and Texas
And she knows how it feels
To be ridin' that hot streak
    And drunk on some backstreet
    Falling off the wagon
    And under the wheels

Time was when she was queen
Now the rodeo's just this old girl's dream
The highs are few and far between
    The lows get the rest
These old hard times ain't nothin' new
Once you've done the best you can do
You just tip your hat to the wild and blue
And you ride off to the west

    Those old high ridin' heroes
    They're anywhere the wind blows
She's been to hell and Texas
And she knows how it feels
To be ridin' that hot streak
And drunk on some back street
    Falling off the wagon
    And under the wheels

    Those old high ridin' heroes
    They're anywhere the wind blows
She's been to hell and Texas
And she knows how it feels
To be ridin' that hot streak
And drunk on some back street
    Falling off the wagon
    And under the wheels
  6. The House That Built Me

Lyrics: The House That Built Me

I know they say "You can't go home again"
I just had to come back one last time
Ma'am, I know you don't know me from Adam
But these hand prints on the front steps are mine

Up those stairs, in that little back bedroom
Is where they did their homework and learned to play guitar
And I bet you didn't know underneath that live oak
My favorite dog is buried in the yard

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it's like I'm someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave
Won't take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

I cut out pictures of houses for years
From "Better Homes and Garden" magazines
    Plans were drawn, concrete poured
Nail by nail and board by board
But once the kids were grown
It was just too much for me

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it's like I'm someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself again

If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave
    I won't take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

They leave home, they move on
Then you do the best you can
I got lost in this whole world and forgot who I am

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it's like I'm someone else
Thought that maybe I could find myself

Ma'am If I could walk around, I swear I'll leave
Won't take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me
  7. Hard Luck

    Lyrics: Hard Luck

    Oh-oh, I got a little story
    Like my kinda luck

I still remember the night I was born
My shoes were ragged and my jeans were torn
No time to worry 'bout none of these things
My mouth was wide open, I just had to sing

    Hard luck, keep truckin'
I was born to a hard luck world
    Hard luck, keep truckin'
Lord knows I'm a hard luck girl
    Yeah!

My daddy told me when I was young
"Girl, don't you do what ol' Hank Williams done
Now look at my life and all the trouble I've had
Shows what you get when you got to be bad"

    Hard luck, keep truckin'
Born to a hard luck world
    Hard luck, I keep truckin'
Lord knows I'm a hard luck girl

    Wind it up

    My luck's changin'

    Oh, my story's so sad
    Aw yeah, aw, so bad
    Listen up y'all

'Cause I was foolish and I wouldn't heed
I knew my crazy ways were bound to succeed
    Nobody's fault, and I won't pass a buck
It was my own hard head and a little bit of

    Hard luck, keep truckin'
I was born to a hard luck world
    Hard luck, keep on truckin'
Lord knows I'm a hard luck girl

    Hard luck, I keep truckin'
I was born to a hard luck world
Hard luck, I keep on truckin'
Lord knows I'm a hard luck girl
    'Til the day I die!
  8. Rich

    Lyrics: Rich

When dad would play his old guitar
He used to rant and rave
Though he hardly had two dimes
He would tell me what God gave
We'd all dance around the room
When he would sing and play

When people said he was poor
He said, "I'm rich in another way"

I went to school and I smelled of smoke
    And my jeans were hand-me-down
I had patches sewn onto patches
We had a single-wide outside of town
My daddy took me bar to bar
To get me where I am today

    People said I was poor
But I was rich in another way
When people said we were poor
We were rich in another way
    Ooh, ooh, ooh
    Rich in another way

Well, daddy's got his wings these days
And his children are all grown
We don't worry 'bout money no more
With all the things we own
Still, the finest things we ever had
Was to never have a thing
So wherever life may take us
We would always live like kings
You know, it wouldn't mean a thing to me
If I lost it all today

When people said we were poor
We were rich in another way
When people said we were poor
You know, we were rich in another way
  9. Seminole Wind Calling

    Lyrics: Seminole Wind Calling

    Seminole wind
Let me feel your breath again
Take me back to the place your love did find me
    Black ribbon, lead me home
    Wherever I may roam
And may the bridges that I cross not burn behind me

    I've seen the Sunset Strip
    And the Hollywood Hills
Where the desert fades into the L.A. sky
Where the palm trees are a-reachin'
    And the holy devil's preachin'
To people blinded by the stars behind their eyes

To be roamin' like a gypsy
    And livin' on the edge
Sometimes your loneliness, it comes with throttle
    And happiness, it seems
    Just like our golden dreams
Won't be found at the bottom of a bottle

    Seminole wind
Let me feel your breath again
Take me back to the place your love did find me
    Black ribbon, lead me home
    Wherever I may roam
And may the bridges that I cross not burn behind me

As I followed this great highway
From the west coast to the east
I cursed the worn-out stars as they were falling
I got tossed and turned around
But I always stood my ground
I still hear the winds of Seminole a-calling

    Seminole wind
Let me feel your breath again
Take me back to the place your love did find me
    Black ribbon, lead me home
    Wherever I may roam
And may the bridges that I cross not burn behind me

    Seminole wind
Let me feel your breath again
Take me back to the place your love did find me
    Black ribbon, lead me home
    Wherever I may roam
And may the bridges that I cross not burn behind me

    Seminole wind
Let me feel your breath again
Take me back to the place your love did find me
    Black ribbon, lead me home
    Wherever I may roam
And may the bridges that I cross not burn behind me

    Seminole wind
Let me feel your breath again
Take me back to the place your love did find me
    Black ribbon, lead me home
    Wherever I may roam
And may the bridges that I cross not burn behind me

    Seminole wind
    Let me feel your breath
Take me back to the place
  10. Bring My Flowers Now

    Lyrics: Bring My Flowers Now

So I said, "Listen, I got..." and I said, uh, somethin' about, uh
Goin' to somebody's funeral or something, she...
I said, "Man," I said, I said, "Bring my flowers now, while I'm living"

Bring my flowers now, while I'm living
I won't need your love when I'm gone
Don't spend time, tears, or money on my old breathless body
If your heart is in them flowers, bring 'em on

All the miles cast a long shadow
I'd take a couple back if I could
    I'd learn to play guitar
Tell my daddy more I loved him
But I believe, for the most part, I done good

There's always sunrise and rainbows in babies
And the little things I cherish on my way
Even though one day they'll bury me and Jesse Ray
I just know we're gonna ride again someday

Bring my flowers now, while I'm living
I won't need your love when I'm gone
Don't spend time, tears, or money on my ol' breathless body
Well, if your heart is in them flowers, bring 'em on

The days are long, but the years are lightning
They're bright and they will never strike again
    I wish I'd been a better friend
A better daughter to my mother
There's no going back when your back's against the wind

So if you got love, then you're sittin' on a gold mine
And you can't take it with you when you go
So don't wait to help your sister
Forgive your brother and your neighbor
We all think we've got time until we don't

Bring my flowers now, while I'm living
I won't need your love when I'm gone
Don't spend time, tears, or money on my old breathless body
If your heart is in them flowers, bring 'em on

If your heart is in them flowers, bring 'em on

Sweet Western Sound (2023)

  1. Tanya

    Lyrics: Tanya

Outward the big roads grow smaller
    Back where the country begins
She's slidin' inside her new four-wheel
And takin' herself for a spin
The grove run the light all around her
Shows off her beauty so well
She looks like the heavenly angel
But Tanya is meaner than hell

    Tanya your colors are sullen
Tanya you're black and you're blue
Sometimes love lurks in strange places
And passes on people like you
  2. Kindness

    Lyrics: Kindness

I have traveled down the long and twisted roads
Through the darkened streets not many souls have known
I've seen beauty some may not understand
I found glory in the ruin of the best-laid plans

There were times tomorrow felt so far away
It seemed as though the bitterness was here to stay
And though I've pushed down on my anger through my tears
I have always felt the love of God so near

I've been everything there is to be
So come on, baby, show some kindness to me

How the hand of fate drags us all behind
Like a river flowin' back and forth in time
To the place we call free will, but we were always meant to be
It was written like a song so long ago
It's a long and lonely river to the sea
So come on, baby, show some kindness to me

When all the wasted years have come and gone
And there's just the empty sky to look upon
And all the dreams that pulled our hearts are memories
I will remember what it felt like to be free

'Cause I've been everything there is to be
Come on, baby, show some kindness to me

How the hand of fate drags us all behind
Like a river flowin' back and forth in time
To the place we call free will, but we were always meant to be
It was written like a song so long ago
It's a long and lonely river to the sea
Come on, baby, show some kindness to me

I've been everything there is to be
So come on, baby, show some kindness to me
Come on, baby, show some kindness to me
Come on, baby, show some kindness to me

    Come on
  3. Breakfast in Birmingham

    Lyrics: Breakfast in Birmingham

    Just a little static
    Breakin' up The Beatles
    A.m. wake-up Tuesday mornin' tunes
    It's a turquoise-blue good mornin'
    With the copper eagle flyin'
Whippin' through the plains north across the motel-rendezvous

You know me, I'm still a-movin'
Just as slow as ol' molasses
A bacon cooked up good and crisp for gone
Moved into Alabama in a purple fire-bird
A-lookin' for some love, lookin' for the words to write a song

As cheap as gas is here
I will look beyond my longin'
The extra dollar doesn't mean a damn
If I get clear of Jasper
    And all this Dixie thunder
I'll get breakfast with brown eyes in Birmingham

    Hippies on the shoulder
Yeah, they're at a place hereabouts
    They're tie-dyed and golden-haired and free
    All the motorcycle cowboys
    Highway 269ers
Pullin' up the shades and shuttin' down the rebel history

    Oh, me, I'm still a-blowin'
Through the same old C-sharp harp
Old hymns and Arthur Alexander songs
Ah, Jake Hess is up in Heaven
    Together, they'll both be singin'
A-singin' with the Lord above you, best be movin' on

As cheap as gas is here
I will look beyond my longin'
The extra dollar doesn't mean a damn
If I get clear of Jasper
    And all this Dixie thunder
I'll get breakfast with brown eyes in Birmingham

As cheap as gas is here
I will look beyond my longin'
The extra dollar doesn't mean a damn
If I get clear of Jasper
    And all this Dixie thunder
I'll get breakfast with brown eyes in Birmingham

I'll get breakfast with brown eyes in Birmingham
Breakfast with brown eyes in Birmingham
    Woah, Birmingham
  4. Waltz Across a Moment

    Lyrics: Waltz Across a Moment

    You could say these days
Are cold and sharp like razor blades
They twist and burn, and then, they fade
Like a kiss from long ago
    I wouldn't tell just anyone
Some days, I feel like a loaded gun
Is our love just a hit-and-run?
    Only time can really know

    Just like the California sun
And I think I'm goin' down
Come and meet me in the shadows
Of this drunk and broken town
Don't curse your mind with yesterday
Or the love we could have found
    Just waltz across the moment
    To that sweet western sound

It seems like a fever dream
Everyone matchin' in their perfect themes
Somethin' they saw on their TV screen
Here I am out on my own
My daddy always seemed to know
Who hung the moon and where the river flowed
You know I can hear him when the night wind blows
Daddy, which way do I go?

'Cause just like the California sun
And I think I'm goin' down
Come and meet me in the shadows
Of this drunk and broken town
Don't curse your mind with yesterday
And the love we could have found
A-Just to waltz across the moment
    To that sweet western sound

    Don't shoot the lights out
    Don't curse the moon
You're the star of the show
    And if you don't go
    How will you know
    Heaven for real?

    Just like the California sun
And I think I'm goin' down
Come and meet me in the shadows
Of this drunk and broken town
Don't curse your mind with yesterday
Or the love we could have found
A-just to waltz across the moment
    To that sweet western sound

    Oh, sweet western sound
  5. Ready as I’ll Never Be

Lyrics: Ready as I’ll Never Be

    I felt you calling
    I saw you start
From the old town movies to the bars on the boulevard
    The bells where ringing
    For gypsy soul
Straight to the smart mouth, little girl from Simeno

    All you have lost
    And the opera queens
They're at those golden arms around the baby of the family
Just stand beside you then, was more than enough
I always was, and always will be looking up

    So gather around now (Oooh)
    It's time to sing
It's bittersweet (Oooh) but it's hell of a silver lining
I tell the same old stories
    Young at your wings
And I get better every time I kiss a weathered cheek
    And watch doves fly
    Sooner than me
I guess I'm ready, all ready as I'll never be

    The snow don't follow Willcox
And the whipper will don't lie
All the chill things you can count on
And if you blink you're gonna miss it twice
Even if I saw it coming, even if I wanted to
Just going to the one place left, that I can't follow you

    So gather 'round now
    It's time to Sing
It's bittersweet (Oooh) but it's hell of a silver lining
I tell the same old stories
    Young at your wings

And I get better every time
    But I don't know
    Ain't' no debts to repay
Even if you're light years away
    May the circle be unbroken
Let it break through your sunny sweet day
    Woah happy day

    Gather 'round now
    It's time to sing
It's bittersweet, but it's hell of a silver lining
I tell the same old stories
    Young at your wings

And I get better every time I kiss a weathered cheek
    And watching doves fly
    Sooner than me
    I guess I'm ready (Oooh)
    Ready as I'll never be
I'm ready as I'll never, be
  6. The List

    Lyrics: The List

Well, I wish time hadn't throttled
I wish years had changed your mind
I'll be the labels of the bottle
'Til that clear green glass can finally get its chance to shine
Well, I ain't gonna make excuses
I've since lost all track of my demons and their muses
So if you're still keeping score, then you can keep your heart attack

I'll make me a list, do whatchu gotta do
You heard stories about my past and they're probably true
Hell, make me a list, oh, that'll be fine
If you wanna sling mud in my face, tell you what?
You can get to the back of the line
I don't live in the past, it ain't gonna last
And the years ain't always been kind
But that list of things you don't like about me
Is gonna be shorter than mine

What I don't mind, I keep in pictures
I don't wear those shoes no more
And the sweet old winds've changed
Took a while to call my name
But now and then, those sleeping dogs come howlin' at my door

I'll make me a list, do whatchu gotta do
You heard stories about my past and they're probably true
I'll make me a list and that'll be fine
If you wanna sling mud in my face, tell you what?
You can get to the back of the line
I don't live in the past, it ain't gonna last
And the years ain't always been kind
But that list of things you don't like about me
Is gonna be shorter than mine

Now I ain't here to make excuses
And I've since lost all track of my demons and their muses
So if you're still keeping a score, then you can keep your heart attack

Hell, make me a list, do whatchu gotta do
Y'all heard stories about my past and they're probably true
I'll make me a list, oh, that'll be fine
If you wanna sling mud in my face, tell you what?
You can get to the back of the line
I don't live in the past, it ain't gonna last
And the years ain't always been kind
But that list of things you don't like about me
Is bound to be shorter than mine

And that list of things you don't like about me
Is gotta be shorter than mine
  7. Letter to Linda:

    Lyrics: Letter to Linda:

Dear Miss Linda, I write to let you know
    You always were my favorite
The greatest and that still goes
I know that you've been struggling
Been in the shadows for so long
I just had to reach out to you
And say you shaped me with your songs

I wanted to be just like you Linda
You left an unforgettable, incredible stamp on me
A voice from heaven above, to the valley below
If I close my eyes, I can still feel the glow
Of her like a whale reaching out from our radio
I thought you should know, rest easy Linda
    You already stole the show

Dearest Linda, I heard your voice today
I walked through the door, at the troubadour
    In desperado saw through plain
We only met once in Nashville, I hope someday we meet again
We can talk about the highs and the times gone by
I just love to be your friend

I remember how they introduced you on the TV
The girl with the warm, beautiful, chipmunk eyes
As the rivers of inspiration flow
You pull me in like an undertow
And you got no idea how your magic grows
But as far as I go, rest easy Linda
You already stole the show, mm-mm

    Thought you should know
    Ooh, Linda, ooh, Linda
    You already stole the show
  8. City of Gold

    Lyrics: City of Gold

My blood runs hot, baby, 'til it goes cold
And you know my heart is a city of gold

The sun sets in the west
But I'm slowing down Hollywood Boulevard
    I don't believe I'm done just yet
I took the hard knocks and the broken dreams
So, I don't freeze in the moment when the good ones go
And I can do in the habits

My blood runs hot, baby, 'til it goes cold
And you know my heart is a city of gold
Honey, if you do just like I told you
Might have a little fun tonight

They got jet planes and bullet trains
Take you anywhere you wanna go, except for yesterday
I wear my sadness like a summer dress
When the wind blows through I feel beautiful
Honey, ain't that just the way?

My blood runs hot, baby, 'til it goes cold
And you know my heart is a city of gold
Honey, if you do just like I told you
Might have a little fun tonight

My blood runs hot, baby, 'til it goes cold
And you know my heart is a city of gold
Honey, if you do it just like I told you

My blood runs hot, baby, 'til it goes cold
And you know my heart is a city of gold
Honey, if you do it just like I told you
Might have a little fun tonight (yeah)
    Have a little fun tonight
  9. That Wasn’t Me

    Lyrics: That Wasn’t Me

Hang on, just to hang on for a minute, I've got something to say
I'm not asking you to move, on, forget it, but these are better days
To be wrong all along and admit it, is not amazing grace
To be loved like a song you remember even when you changed
    Tell me

Did I go on a tangent?
Did I lie through my tears?
Did I cause you to stumble on your feet?
Did I bring shame on my family?
Did it show you that I was weak?
Whatever you've seen, that wasn't me
    That wasn't me
    That wasn't me

When you're lost, you will toss every lucky coin you'll ever trust
And you'll hide from your God like He ever turns His back on us
And you'll fall all the way to the bottom and land on your own life
Can you learn who you are, even if it doesn't take your life?
    So, tell me

Did I go on a tangent?
Did I lie through my tears?
Did I cause you to stumble on your feet?
Did I bring shame on my family?
Did it show you that I was weak?
Whatever you've seen, but that wasn't me
    That wasn't me
    That wasn't me (no)

But, I want you to know that you'll never be alone
    I wanna believe
Do I make myself the blessing to everyone I leave?
And when you fall, I will get you on your feet

Do I spend time with my family?
Did it show you that I was weak?
    When that's what you see
    That'll be me
    That'll be me
    That'll be me

    That'll be tears
